Outer Hebrides Map

The Outer Hebrides (or Western Isles) [na h-Eileanan Siar], are a chain of islands stretching for 130 miles along the edge of the Atlantic, fringed on the west by mile after mile of clean, white, sandy beaches....Need I say more?

Being exposed to the full force of North Atlantic storms, they are one of the most consistent surf destinations in Europe. However, their remoteness, climate and inaccessibilty deter many visitors so the countless breaks are never crowded. Seeing another person in the water, especially on the smaller islands, is very unlikely.

I went to the Outer Hebrides for a week in September 1998 with my brother Brad. I had such a good time that I went there again in September 2000 for two weeks with Anna. The surf goes off, and the windsurfing spots were perfect. The scenery is spectacular, the weather better than we expected and the locals are friendly.

This section of my website will describe some of the islands of the Outer Hebrides, indicate a few of the numerous surf spots, windsurfing locations, kiting locations and other places not to be missed. I won't describe every spot in detail as there are just too many to list and part of the fun of visiting the Outer Hebrides is the exploration.

If you are planning a trip to these unforgetable islands, the following maps are indispensable:

Don't forget to take your waterproofs, insect repellent and all windsurfing, surfing, kiting and other accessories as obtaining spares in the Outer Hebrides is impossible.

As well as being an excellent 'extreme sports' location, the islands also boast a wealth of historical and natural history attractions. From Neolithic standing stones, chambered cairns, castles and unique fishing and farming relics to an abundance of interesting birds, floral and fauna. If none of this interests you, then just kick back, slow down and enjoy the relaxed, slow pace of life in an idyllic setting. Alternatively, experience a 'night on the town' in Stornoway.
