G,day Justal, Refering to your entry regarding kayak trip from Borth to Derwenlas , could you give any advice on the strength of the tides in the estuary. I want to do the trip in the late spring from Aberdovey to Dovey Juntion Railway station, using my Feathercraft folder which packs into a large rucksack and goes on the train

It will depend a lot on when you go really... If you time it right you can have the tides help you, and the difference in flow between a big spring tide and a neap tide is huge so that will make a big difference. Also if you are only going one way, upstream, then the amount of rain we have had will make a difference too.

Whenever I've done it I've picked nice calm windless days in the summer and have generally gone upstream on the flow and downstream when the tide is ebbing.

The tides can be really strong, so pick your day carefully.

Al.

I'm sure you'll have a good day, it's a really nice little paddle.

I’m a level 3 kayak coach and paddle with Aberkayakers (and I live in Borth). As a rule we avoid the Dyfi due to the access problems. We regularly paddle the Ystwyth, Rheidol and the Dulas with no complaints. If you need some info just give us a shout.
