TARIFA NUKES!
The INtuition Legends course in Tarifa was more than we could ever have dreamed of; the boutique accommodation in the centre of the old
town was super styling with the highest roof top in the village, perfect for breakfasts and singalongs at 4am! We were surrounded by
the finest local cocktail and tapas bars and the nightlife was as explosive as the windsurfing.
Everyday the famous Levante wind blew it’s nuts off; one day was even too strong to windsurf! We had two days with 5-6m weather,
and every other day on 4m sails! It was wild and invigorating. We’ve all kept in regular contact since we formed such camaraderie
in the adverse conditions and the late night partying. Splash Gordon, Whitey, Mr Tration, Long John, Levi, Helen, Andy, John, Tanja,
Tony and Wendy, big up to yo’ll! Epic week.
FAME AT LAST FOR INTUITION GUESTS!
Spain’s ‘Hi!’ magazine (Hello mag style), featured INtuition guests as hard core windsurfers from Tarifa in their
recent issue, with photos on the front cover, contents page and throughout the feature inside! Skinny Nick managed to pretend he was
Dave White too, classic. Little did the photographers know, but all of us stuffed half litre water bottles down our wetsuits (Atlantic
still a bit cold down there). Who knows where else those pics might get used!
UK TIKKA MASSALA TOUR.
This years INtuition UK Tour with all the JP and Neil Pryde goodies fitted snugly in between the Tarifa and Turkey trips. So I went
from perfect Tapas and Spanish delicacies, to a fortnight of tikka massalas, then onto Turkish delights, which are possibly the best
culinary pleasures on earth. See, there is more to life than windsurfing. Eating and sleeping too.
Other than two weeks of eating curry, the prevailing wind and the UK tour was as busy and successful as ever. With much of the
INtuition program based around learning complicated moves in slow motion in light winds, the long summer nights is the right time to
perfect the ground work for carve gybes etc. Little did I know I’d start the tour with torrential rain and lightening at Rutland!
Anyway, a few obstacles here and there in life are a pleasure to deal with so all was cool, and the sun brightened up the rest of the
tour with visits to the usual haunts oop north with great winds, eastwards with wind as usual in Sheppey, south, central and west. All
cracking, great to see so many of you again, judging by your emails you found the INtuition very productive, thanks!
ROAST TURKEY.
Knowing wind, when we arrived in Turkey to find decent conditions and two hours left of daylight, the guests and I needed little
persuasion to go afloat and get warmed up to the Alacati Turkish bath. Also on the final morning with only a potential hour of
windsurfing with our airport bus to catch, we made the very most of the conditions getting soaked right up to the split second the bus
left. A big thanks to Club Mistral Alacati for being so flexible to allow us these awkward timings, it was invaluable as we were
otherwise extremely unlucky with the winds there with a total of only four planing days.
Both the week before and the week after had wind every day (a few of the dudes stayed for more!) So we were genuinely unlucky, but
nevertheless windsurfed everyday and sussed heaps in waterstarting, gybing, footstraps, harness etc. Another classic week with the
Italian mob, Agent Smith, Rad Chris, Sik Dude Jenny, Mike, Simon, Sherry, El Presidente, Nick and Tracy, Mark and Liz, and Tall Paul!
DESERT ISLAND DIKS AND THE PWA FUERTEVENTURA WORLD CUP.
Straight after Turkey I flew to Fuerteventura, where I’d not been for thirteen years! Needless to say, mega changes. And although
the old town of Corelejo is now a massif English cocktail of burgers and sunburn, the winds, the surf and the sun haven’t changed
at all. Plus there’s Corky’s Bar nowadays, which put a slant on things…
The first week I spent doing a travel feature soon to be found in Boards mag, (Desert Island Diks) and the second as Press Officer and
onboard cameraman for the PWA World Cup down south at Sotavento, hanging with the crew, having way more fun than is ever printable even
in these loose ramblings.
Britain’s eighteen year old Robby Swift stole the show winning the Freestyle Grand Slam, kicking everyone’s ass to now be
equal first in the world with JP Neil Pryde team mate Ricardo Campello of Brazil. There’s only four sailors over twenty one years
old the top twenty now of the PWA Freestyle World Tour, as ‘new school’ freestyling gets radical.
Immediately after this mind blowing spectacle was another; the first PWA Super-X event, a discipline that combines racing and
freestyle: Eight sailors start from the beach, race out through the surf, jump over two inflatable obstacles (narrowly escaping
injury), before duck gybing around the first mark, then a forward loop on the reach back into the beach, another duck gybe, a spock, a
grubby and a flaka (all bizarre twists of freestyle) and another duck gybe and another obstacle before the finish. Resulting in hard
core wipe outs and collisions that necessitated body armour and crash helmets in this no rules Grand National style carnage.
Throughout this event I was following the fleet around the course with a film camera stuck to my crash helmet, getting a real taste of
the excitement and some unbelievable footage. However the knocks and heavy landings from some of the jumps wrote off three performance
video cameras! And unfortunately loosing a sequence of one of the funniest things I ever saw windsurfing; After Kauli Seadi’s
win, Ricardo and him performed an on water strip tease for my camera, pulling forward loops, shove its and vulcans with their shorts
round their ankles and their Brazil nuts flapping as I filmed in hysterics! Priceless footage lost with a total of £3000 worth of
PWA cameras destroyed in the process! Anyway, plenty of action was caught so check out the PWA World Tour on Sky TV and in the 2003
Tour highlights video later this year.
TEQ TIP; THE RUSSIAN GIRLS.
One of the most important Core Skills in windsurfing is to look where you want to go, or look upwind.
Looking where you want to go, instead of at your hands or feet, helps you survive manoeuvres, just like driving a car…
Looking upwind provides you with the information you need, so as to be able to anticipate what’s about to happen next. Looking
for gusts is especially important to prevent catapulting and to help your early planing. Also by looking upwind, you tend to head in
that direction, which is better than drifting downwind.
In Turkey during the INtuition course, a large group of Russian windsurfers were sailing from a centre a few doors upwind of ours.
Escorting the windsurfers were about thirty stunning Russian girls, so stunning, no one could keep their eyes off them. Which turned
out to be a good thing as I needed a point of reference upwind. Hence, the latest INtuition Core Skill, the ‘Russian
Girls’. Use it whenever you’re windsurfing, especially in gusty winds, so you can tell what’s coming next from
upwind.
EMAIL OF THE MONTH; INTUITION DOWN UNDER?
I received this email from Simon ‘Spastic Dancer’ Muriel of INtuition Surf Gods course Ireland 2002 fame.
“Perfect breaks, blue skies, guaranteed winds. The West Coast of Australia is nothing short of the Promised Land for windsurfers
the world over.
Esperance, Margaret River, Lancelin, Geraldton, Gnaraloo; they've been crying out your name all these years. Its time to heed their
call.
We're a bunch of UK windsurf nuts with a bit of experience in the TV industry and access to all the professional video kit. From
November this
Year we're taking a big ol' break from the working life and flying out to Perth. There we'll be loading up a van with polecams, mast
cams, long lens gear etc along with all our windsurf kit and cruising the length of this incredible coastline.
This is an open invitation to anyone up for living the endless summer dream. Obviously we're looking for some serious talent for the
on-water action but
this is predominantly a lifestyle film and anyone who thinks they can bring something to the tour would be welcomed with open beer
bottles. No itinerary, no hassles, just get your mates together, buy a van and cruise at leisure. We'll be keeping in touch on the web
message board at http://com3.akheva.com/bwindsurfwa so you'll always be able to find out where the party's at. Take a look now to see
how things are progressing and
if you’re keen you can contact us there.
No excuses, come join us on the mother of all windsurf tours!
E-mail simon.muriel@granadamedia.com”
Sounds awesome, sounds like a ‘convoy!’ What a trip that’ll be. Simon is a black belt in Piano and his dancing
regularly turns heads, away from him. I couldn’t recommend a trip more left field, perfect escapism. Go for it! Oh, and Lancelin
in W.A. has a massive flat water lagoon area so you don’t have to worry about waves.
THE PRICE OF SURF PASSION.
What would you pay for a decent surf or sail? How much value could you put on learning to waterstart or carve gybe? Hmmmnnn. Priceless!
At 10pm one recent Friday night, Timo and I made a final check on the internet and found the huge swell was still pounding the north
shore of Ireland, so booked a flight which left nine hours later, then went to the pub. Three hours sleep later, a short flight and
three hours drive across Ireland and we’re paddling out in perfect uncrowded big surf! A dozen waves later, each a few hundred
metres ride and double over head; epic! A five hour journey in traffic back to Belfast, a huge night out on the town, two hours sleep
and another short flight and we’re back in Blighty hungover and all surfed out. At approximately £20 a wave, it was still a
bargain. These opportunities in life must be taken!
IRELAND AL FRESCO.
Dates for the INtuition Surf God courses (entry level wave sailing) in Brandon Bay are Oct 11th and 18th and there’s only a few
places left. Price is £550 based on two sharing including ferry, B&B accom and INtuition 24/7 Surf God coaching from Cribby.
(Exchange rate poor but we’ve hung onto last years price!)
Whether you’ve reserved a place or not, all bookings need to be made direct with Cribby by replying to this email.
CRIBBY GETS OFFICE JOB?!
For the next five weeks I’m drawing the curtains and learning how to use a computer so I can update my website and make a DVD.
Been talking about it for years but the surf’s always dragged me outdoors. Anyone who could offer me any advice on anything with
a keyboard and a screen, I’d gratefully appreciate it!
The new website is going to feature over thirty travel features, heaps of technique and tonnes more top secret ideas which are going to
rock. If you want to swap your IT brilliance for my dodgy coaching, lets talk!
SUPER-X UK!
During the INtuition weekend in Alton Water with Ski Surf, we ran Britain’s first Super-X comp. In light winds, sailors raced
from a beach start on one side of the lake to a beach finish on the other, and had to go for two gybes, two tacks and two rig
360’s on the way across. After three races and plenty of swimming in the100 degree heat wave, racer Alice Monk finished first
ahead of young freestyler Alex Newby and upwind guru Peter Goodyear. They go down in history as the first Super-X champions in the UK
and proof that Super-X can be held anywhere, anytime.
BEAN CHOCKA.
Like I said, I’ve been on the road so busy with INtuition courses I’ve not had time to write this latest enews until now.
Hopefully you’re still awake this far into this month’s ramblings and can accept my humblest apologies.
INTUITION THREESOME.
INtuition’s unique three step learning process rules! So say the guests romping through the sport using their INtuition.
1. INtuition Muscle Memory. Learn the correct technique in an easy ‘copy me’ environment on your own kit and simulators
ashore, to thoroughly and clearly understand the correct method behind the madness.
2. INtuition Slow Motion. On a floaty board with a small throw-about rig, suss the timing and balance for the skill with a chance to
think, perfecting your Muscle Memory on light wind days, for instance on the INtuition UK Tour or lazy summer evenings.
3. INtuition Full Speed. Once complicated or tricky moves now become easy, as you sail through them INtuitively.
INtuition. Clearly, the best coaching.
OVER AND SHOUT.
If you know anyone else mad enough to waste their time reading this enews nonsense, please email them this enews, or gimme their email
address. As you may have heard, my internet skills are non-existent and as a result I have lost a large proportion of my data base.
Trouble is I can’t fire myself, so have to beg, borrow and steal to get back into the swing of things. Please help by spreading
the INtuition gospel and this viral enews. Mucho gracias. Guy xxx
PLEASE PHONE 01273 842 144 FOR HOLIDAY BOOKINGS & INFO OR EMAIL ME!
Use your INtuition, the anti-wrinkle cream for deeply engrained bad habits
Is there wind on the way??
