Yes to all of that.
Where do you mean by West Wales??.... Pembrokeshire or Cardigan Bay??
Pembrokeshire is your best bet as there are quite a few surf schools there.
There are a couple based in the St. Davids area:
Ma Simes Surf Shop organises kit hire and lessons
Whitesands Surf School is just up the road from St. Davids and also does lessons.
As do TYF No Limits Adventure in St. Davids.
Elsewhere in Pembrokeshire, theres a surf shop in Borad haven that hires out kit and may arrange lessons (Haven Sports)..i can find
contacts details for you if you need them.
And also the shop in Newgale (Newsurf) hires kit and I think arranges lessons.
In Cardigan Bay then Stormriders in Aberystwyth will hire out kit and if yoou talk to Mike who owns it he might be able to sort you out with someone
who can give you lessons.
Theres bound to be a few other places, but those are the ones I know of off the top of my head.
How old are the children? Do they actually need lessons or would just hiring the kit and giving it a go be OK??
For a nice easy to understand Swell Forecast for Wales, try this:
Surf System
There are loads of others, but you are best off just searching for one that suits your needs.

thanks for the info, my ankle biters are 11, 13, and 15 I just want to get the lazy sod's off their chubby little ass's.
I ve not tried surfing myself, is it better to just gear up and have a go or get a few pointers first?
By the way spencer conditions at weston on monday were perfect, hope that doesn't make you feel worse
