I gotta mountain bike question...

The crankset on my kids 26" mountain bike has broken.. It's a Wal-Mart special... I wanna replace the crankset with a better one.. Will any 18 speed crankset fit this bike?

depends what type of crank it has, is it a two pieve or a one piece? check the fittings also.
