What a Day
Today was so good that I've decided to post the whole report here so this is just the same as whats writen in todays diary entry...
Where was everyone else??
What a day...one of the best windsurf sessions I've had. I was out on my Mistral Eruption wave board with a 5.0m sail and perfectly
powered up in the WNW winds with the sun shining...OK, there was the odd crazy hailstorm that really hurt, but it was mainly sunny. The
sea was pretty rough with some big waves, and on top of these conditions, I was sailing well. Right from my first run, I was straight
onto the plane and into the straps (a 4.5m sail would probably have been enough) I floated over the first 5 or 6 lines of whitewater
and then as bigger walls of whitewater approached I though that maybe I'd met my match, but somehow I just bumped up and over them and
on towards walls of steep unbroken waves. To start with I was a little cautious and tried not to go for any big jumps by avoiding the
steepest faces. I either headed upwind to avoid them and just did small slow jumps or beared away and floated off the tops of the waves
and into long floaty jumps. The water was actually really rough so I spent quite a bit of my time airborne without even trying anyway.
The challenging conditions also meant that I didn't make too many gybes on the outside, but dropping into the water was quite nice for
a little rest anyway!.
Riding the waves back in was just as good as jumping on the way out as I picked up ridiculous speed as I dropped down the faces of the
sometimes logo high faces. After a few runs without getting trashed I started to increase in confidence and started going for bigger
and bigger jumps on the way out and started carving around on the faces on the way back in. Come the end, I was hitting the biggest
waves at full speed and the only way I could go was UP UP UP. Somehow, everything was still working and despite a few scary nose first
landings I seemed to pull off everything I went for (almost). The worst (Best) wipeout I managed was an overcooked aerial off the lip.
I was screaming along the face of the wave, went for a little aerial off the lip but it turned out much bigger than I'd expected. As I
looked for my landing I realised that I was about to land nose first onto the face of a rapidly steepening section of wave so I decided
to bail and had to swim after my kit a little. All in all an excellent day sailing on my own in epic conditions. I easily made my
biggest 10 jumps of all time with some bone-jarring landings and mad wave-rides. Everything is aching now!
