Ok...This is the way I do it.... There are 2 techniques in my opinion depending on what sort of wave is coming at you.

A nice clean tubing wave:

First off you need to be going under the water in the right place. That is you need to start ducking at the point where the breaking wave hits the sea.......
Hold onto the front of the board with both hands lean all your weight over the front and try and get as deep as possible. The Wave will break onto you as your under water, but fear not as you should be in a low pressure zone under the wave. If done correctly the wave will suck you under and by pushing your knees onto the board to point it upwards you'll end up getting spat out at the back...
If its a huge wave watch out for the suck back which might suck your flippers off or worse suck you back into the wave and throw you off the edge backwards (pretty rare this happens though)

A fillthy huge wall of white water coming your way:

As long as there is no one behind you... ditch your board and DIVE DIVE DIVE!!!!!! Your board will find the easiest way through the wave on its own and shouldn't be a problem. When you come to the surface get ready to hold your breath again as more than likey they'll be another wave waiting to hit you.

Just remember... never stop paddling for a second... just keep on going.... you can have a rest when you get to the back of the line up!

All in all, the best way is to keep practicing.. i've made some aweful mistakes when I was learning to Duck Dive.... getting swept 30ft underwater springs to mind

Anyway hope this helps i'm sure some other people will be able to discribe this a bit better than me!

Wasn't summer great? I think it was on a Thursday!

If there was a vision like that awaiting me when I'm duck diving a winter swell in wales, i'd do it more often!!

I'd start scuba diving actually!

how to duck dive

Try this site: how to duck dive

Even though it's surfers, the sites slide show gives you a good idea of the underwater anatomy of a wave - same for surfers as for body boarders, surfers are just duck diving a bigger board.
