vw fuel efficiency
shem - 23-8-2008 at 19:20

Due to the cost of fuel, and the fact that Im gonna be doing more driving in the near future, my beloved Toyota hilux is probably gonna be sold, ( boo hoo).

What kind og fuel figures are you guys with transporters getting????

How much do they cost to fill from empty, and and how many miles do you get on a tank??

bucski - 23-8-2008 at 20:59

Hi shem, on my old T4 transporter I would get around 38mpg on a run and that was a 1.9 td only 68bhp, on the new beast which is 2.5 tdi, 174bhp I reckon it's about 32mpg, but could get more if I was more steady, however if I give it some welly it drops a fair bit.

Spooker - 23-8-2008 at 22:35

Me humble Vivaro is a 1.9tdi, originaly 104 bhp, chipped now to 125 or so, does 35mpg with average driving, had 38 on a long run.
Looks good too - which is important

shem - 24-8-2008 at 08:01

A lot better than my truck then, which takes £95 quid to fill up and gives me 450 miles!!! Ta.

dunk - 24-8-2008 at 08:15

My T4 2.5 tdi's chipped to 120bhp. Like Spooks I get between 35-38 depending on how I drive it.

Its gotta be VW Shem for the "cool factor"

Fart Boy - 24-8-2008 at 17:18

Mines the std 2.5 TDi and is about 30 to 32 and does not change even if I load it up

shem - 24-8-2008 at 17:51

Low 30s, dont temp me to sell the truck much, think I may have to go for the Astra van, and hope its big enough for all my toys!

REECEY - 24-8-2008 at 22:33

I too have a T4. 2.5 888SPL and if i drive steady( 2 hours) it costs me £25 in deisel. Thats Telford-Borth and back. 170 Miles round trip.

quick alternative Shem.......... I drive the five seat renault kangoo and have had two in the van version. the 1500 diesel DCI sounds under powered on paper but I cruise motorway speeds and it will ton up with three off duty coppers, two buggies and all their swag. I know, I know they look a bit postman pat but here's the crunch MPG...... Aberystwyth to Milford Haven and back last weekend to fetch an armchair - £17 in diesel driving the scenic route hard in third and fourth mostly. Birmingham airport and back £22 - Home to Leicester and back less than £30 quid. Capel Seion to Ynyslas is 12.5 miles and I made the round trip three times over the weekend fully loaded on 8 quid warning light to warning light (as near as damn it is to swearing 50 to the gallon)

Thanks for that, I have looked at a couple, and there not a bad price, Hhmmmm choice choices. My big problem is that I dont weanna sell the pick up, as its so handy for carrying long lengths of timber, but with fuel the way it is I need a cheaper motor to run.

Thanks for that

Spooker - 26-8-2008 at 18:06

Here's another thought - Mondeo TDCi estate - more room than an astra van, much nicer to drive, more versatile, 135mph if you're in a rush. you can sleep in it - I did a whole summer of weekends in mine - and that was only a hatch. Add a roofrack and you can carry all sorts of loooong things too.

And economy - I commuted to Newcastle on Tyne in mine for 6 months, every trip was a constant 90-100mph and it rarely dropped below 50mpg. I did a 'test' tankfull at legal speeds (boring) but it was nudging 60mpg - and for a big, comfortable car thats well impressive.

Not quite as butch as your jeepy thing Shem, but I bet your flecy lil friends will love it

shem - 26-8-2008 at 18:51

Was strangely just discussing a focus estate earlier spooks, and yes the mondeo estate would be even better, ( Ive got a mondeo saloon allready). Im pretty sure Id end up sticking a shovel, spade or chop saw through a window at some point however.Hhmmm suppose I could total black out the windows and ply line the inside tho, Hhmmm, food for thought!!

Loxley - 27-8-2008 at 12:52

Blimey, tales of high mpg are making me weep.
I get only 22-23mpg out of my camper, well basically its about 320 miles to the tank ( 60 or so litres ), that said i can just get to Borth and home again on the one fill up.

If the fuel keeps on rising i think i will have to consider slimming down in more ways than one.

shem - 27-8-2008 at 17:07

Today Im thinking transit connest, Hhmmmm, wot idea will I have next, ( Im also thinking I may swap the 900 Hornet for a Hyabusa)!

jack russell - 27-8-2008 at 20:05

Had one of those as well Shem!!!!! (transit connect)lovely motor but if you're thinking second hand best of luck finding one in tip top nick that hasn't got a waiting list. Go for a model with twin sliding doors and all the trick bits they hold their money better. I could get 2 full disco's in one and it still pulls like a great dane on speed. I got low to mid forties out of mine
