To boot or not to boot?
Kitty - 6-3-2008 at 12:40

Hey there all. Need some advice please..I'm about to become a newbie Kiter (embarassingly nesh too)..going on 2 week hol this Sat to get started. What's the score on wearing wetsuit boots..good idea or would they get in the way?

if you are in our cold water UK. then wear some or get numb feet; if you can get away without them its a bonus. i have some 3mm wet suit socks with a grippy bottom i wear in winter, with these i can still grip my board.

Get some boots is my advice. When you are learning you will spend a fair amount of time immersed in the water, without full protection you will get cold and fed up. It is only as you get competent you will reap the benefits of no boots, this is so you can grip the board with feeling. You will rely on this later, for when you begin to jump or commit to some more technical moves. There are benefits however to wearing boots with split toes, as they tend not to twist, there is nothing worse than not feeling as if your shoes are on correct never mind trying to put you feet in the board and watching the kite and where you are going at the same time.

I wear boots as do most for the winter, most boards now compensate for this with fully adjustable straps.

Get some gloves too and don't forget your helmet. You may even consider a bouancy aid, these will keep safe in the water and will keep you that bit warmer too.

Appearance and fashion too often in this sport puts people at risk, you may look a bit of a kook for a while. But it you stay safe and comfortable in the beginning you will enjoy and progress much faster.

Good luck and enjoy one of the best sports in the water

wetsuit outlets have a good selection kit by most of the popular brands. I got all my stuff from them.
