Am I wrong? Very close to me

crezzee - 9-5-2007 at 13:50

Blackrock very much open for kitesurfers, no land boarding though.

Aberdyfi wasn't bad though

col123 - 9-5-2007 at 16:14

i'll be up for one day, got a new airush vapor to try..

shem - 9-5-2007 at 16:23

Ill be on the beach all weekend, actually looks o.k. for teaching for a change, just as well as I have a list as long as my armn to get through!!!!

Loxley - 9-5-2007 at 17:01

First time out for me this weekend since the op, so fingers crossed my nose wont explode ! but will be at black rock probably or possibly going to try the beach at pwllheli. There were 2 peeps out on monday and the bay looked perfect for it. Massive flat water bay opening out on to some waves and chop.

Fart Boy - 9-5-2007 at 17:57

Well I have been to Borth for the last two weekends but unfortunatly more work on the house and a business trip will keep me off the water till the end of the month. See you out there then.

Enjoy

Fat Shady - 9-5-2007 at 18:15

Hi Crezzee & Phil,

cant make saturday as I have got to stay in London friday night but will be up for a session on sunday if the forecast is decent.

kiteboardingcrazy - 9-5-2007 at 21:26

yep blackrock defo ok for kitesurfing,as we were kiting back and forth at high speed only 20 feet from the shoreline doing hang five hand signs to the beach patrol guys((knarly man lol) that were sat watchin us in the patrol car.was a truly awesome day even kited over to Harlech and back...thanks for top session crezzee

hi to neil and shem and carrot top aka wayne(hope youve not sold my shorty)see you all sat if the wind plays out again

phil...........

gazxtreme - 9-5-2007 at 23:35

you guys should think about coming to round 2 at Barrow In Furness. Aarron Hadlow has just confirmed he is taking part, his first UK showing in 3 years. We have top speed riders from South Africa and the wind is looking better as the week progresses. I think 60 riders are now expected. Check it out at www.walneyguide.co.uk or www.nwks.co.uk

kiteboardingcrazy - 10-5-2007 at 08:14

nothing worse than being at the coast and watchin someone else havin all the fun, rather watch um oin a dvd in the comfort of my own sofa on non windy days lol

crezzee - 10-5-2007 at 08:47

Hey Wayne, Sunday sounds like the best day for me, so might see you there. We gota get dave the pond kiting, he can use my diy chip fork if he wants.

Si_B - 10-5-2007 at 11:20

Should be at Aberdovey Saturday. Potential thunder storms for Sunday, so I think I'll give that a miss.

Fingers crossed for another good session.

Do the tides have a majoe effect on the kiting area at Black Rock ??, I've never kited there before, so not sure what the conditions are like for sailing launching etc.

Cheers,

Simon

danh - 10-5-2007 at 12:43

will be over sunday, got monday and tuesday off aswell if anyone is about those 2 days let me know

Hello Si

Launching is no issue. The beach is massive. I think its quite sheltered as well. No huge waves and chop like Aber last week. Saying that I've never kited there either so I'm not 100%

Tides shouldn't be an issue unless your hunting for the lagoon that supposed to form at the South end. I'll have to take a look.

Still confused over the ban though. Everywhere else I look says its closed for all kiting but if you guys were there with the wardens then??? My brain hurts

Fat Shady - 10-5-2007 at 18:40

hey Phil

if you want to see your shorty again you will have to fight every body else on ebay first

shem - 11-5-2007 at 07:26

Windguru only showing 9-10 knots now? Well ave to wait and see

danh - 11-5-2007 at 07:49

Is it just me or does most of this year seem to have been piss poor for wind.

Its been 2 months since i got out, finally got some time off from the house and theres no wind again. Still gonna make the trip i think for the day out.

Fingers crossed Monday has potential.

crut - 11-5-2007 at 18:43

Are people going to borth?

I'm doing a day trip tomorrow.

What is the sand like? If the wind turns out rubbish for the kiteboard, I think I'll want to do a bit of landboarding.

See people there!

crut

kiteboardingcrazy - 11-5-2007 at 20:27

The sand is yellowish brown a consists of small grains of fragmented rocks that gradually break down by the tides of the sea making(sand)
it is nice to walk in and tickles your toes, not so nice if the a dog turd in it though
Sand is great for building sand castles

hope this answers your question lol

crut - 11-5-2007 at 22:59

My god, you are a bunch of pedantic b*stards. I hope the wind is up, I need a kiteboarding fix

kiteboardingcrazy - 12-5-2007 at 00:20

shem - 12-5-2007 at 07:15

justal - 12-5-2007 at 07:47

justal - 12-5-2007 at 10:39

Told you... It's pretty windy out there now...gusting to 26 knots and sunny too!

Al.

shem - 12-5-2007 at 17:16

Anepic day over dyfi side. I was teaching but the guys learning were spoilt. Noonoo and si b were having as epic sesh as well. Best Ive seen Si ride, I recon the sonic power is working a treat for him!

shem - 12-5-2007 at 17:17

Oh, and thanks for the 5 minuite loan of ya kite Si, that first big one sorted me out for the day!

Si_B - 12-5-2007 at 18:05

No problem, thanks for the tips on carving onto my toeside.

I guess now I've seen someone do a backloop on my kite.....I will have to have a go myself.

Epic session, nearly turned back twice on the way down as the weather was so bad.

Simon

crut - 13-5-2007 at 06:32

Enjoyed borth today!

Well, until the spar snapped in my venom.

Thinking of picking up another kite, slingshot link or gk sonic, what are peoples thoughts?

shem - 13-5-2007 at 07:59

Well if you want any second hand links Im selling some now, that people have traded in because they wanted sonics! Hhhmmmm, prob best stick to a sonic, theyre sweet!!!!

I don't think I've heard anything but good things about the Sonics. It was clear that they were the kite of choice yesterday! At the end of the day, it was a Link or a Sonic that I was looking at.

Looks like it is going to be a sonic

Si_B - 13-5-2007 at 11:42

I've owned both....so I guess I could give my opinion.

My link was a good kite, but it had very little low end for a 12m. I'm a fairly big chap and I didn't think it really came alive until it was blowing 16-18 knots. I could get out on my 8m sonic with a bit of effort in that wind. This was my main reason for getting rid of it.

I had a few prolems with the bridles wrapping around the kite after a crash, but to be fair the three times it happened, I did manage to get the kite untangled to get back to the beach. You also have to keep an eye on it if you have it in the zenith (putting your board on your feet for example). Just like my 12TD, it does have a bit of a habit of nose diving in a lull or over flying you if you lose tension in the rear lines.

I don't like the who's kites the best debates, but the Sonic is a really easy kite to fly, which in my last two sessions has meant that I can concentrate on my riding, without worry about what my kite is doing.

Wish I had bought the Sonic last year when I was messing around with my TD's (not including the 16m which is a brilliant kite), then I might be at the same level as some of the other guys who are now jumping and backlooping.

Cheers,

Simon

Fart Boy - 13-5-2007 at 13:00

I would agree with the comments made by Si, but add that after owning a sonic for over a year now the build quality is not as good as I would have liked. It has had a lot of use though. The new sonics look better though.

crut - 13-5-2007 at 21:23

Thanks for the heads up.

I think I am going to take the plunge and go for a 11m GK Sonic. From what people have said, the reviews I've read, the 2007 seems to sort out all the issues people have mentioned.

Noo Noo - 14-5-2007 at 07:20

I ache even today. Cant believe i had the place to myself most of Saturday.

Nice to meet you Shem.
Good to see you again Si.

Found the problem with my 12. leading edge bladder's got a small hole right near the end. Dont know if I can fix it. Real trouble getting it to lay flat. 9m saved the day though. Any tips anyone.

Never flown a Sonic but I've looked over the 06 and I've seen Si's 07 up close. Would I be right in saying the 07 looks beefed up? To me it looks like they've really tried to toughen the kite up and make everything a whole lot more durable. I was always surprised at how light the 06 was. Not that there were any quality issues with it though. Everything was very simple, small and light. In comparison to me the 07 looks a lot more reinforced. looks sweet in the air. Still nice and nimble.

If you giving out free tips Shem I might have to pick your brains. really struggling to nail some transitions and rotations. beginning to drive me crazy.

Hope the guys you were teaching went away happy Shem. Looked like they had a good time.

Oh yeah anyone know where I can get a buoyancy aid. Just good sense I think when kiting at Aber. So much water on the move .

Thanks for that extra information Noo Noo

shem - 14-5-2007 at 08:03

Yip, the new sonic sure is sweet. I think that what every body needs to remember is that with all new bow or hybrid style kites, every one that rides them is pushing the kite to massive wind ranges. For example my 11 meter sonic takes me from 10-30 knots. So thats 1 kite for virtually all my kiting, at least 85% any way. Where as 3 years ago I would have had 3 kites do the same job. So of course a new style kite will wear out a lot quicker as its getting loads more use, 3 times more use pretty much!! So dont expect your 12 meter bow/hybrid to be looking as good as your same size C kite used to look after a year, cos it aint gonna!

Rant over!! One thing is certain, every body seems to be kiting a lot better and spending a lot less time running back to the beach for different sized kites now.

Sorry didn't word that very well. To me they look completely different now. The 07 looks a lot more solid when on the ground. I actually considered an 06 but at the time couldn't find any 2nd hand bargains had I seen one I would have snapped it up. Went with something else in the end.

yeah I love the added simplicity of it all. "Today is a 12m day." God knows how you used to do it Shem.

Si_B - 14-5-2007 at 12:37

One thing you can't do with a sonic is pack it up in mid air ready to pack away, before you even got off the water.

Sorry Col, but I've never seen I kite fold up like that before. I was amazed you could pump it back up, I thought you had blown something for sure.

I've got an 06 8m sonic. I don't think they have gone overboard in beefing it up, just added a bit of strength where it was needed. Not had any problems with mine yet, but I am keeping an eye on the stitching to try and catch anything before it happens. Also, my 8 doesn't come out the bag that often, so that will help.

Cheers,

Simon

Yep that's exactly what i meant. Just rubbish at putting it on screen. I always liked the look of the Sonics; 06 and 07's. Your 07 looked absolutely rock solid in the air. Very nice indeed.

yep tough and clever them Ocean Rodeo's. Gave the kite a right pasting cause it didn't fold itself perfectly in half and dive into the bag. Naughty kite.

Seriously though I got lucky I reckon. Still cant figure out what happened. I was redirecting mid gybe and bang I honestly thought i'd snapped a line or a bridle. Pumped it back up on Sunday. Seems OK. I do seem to be losing a tiny bit of air out the valve though, but after 4hrs+ on the water...............

I still ache wonderful feeling

Did you ever find out where the person with the Caution came from? Appeared from nowehere

Si_B - 14-5-2007 at 13:55

He must have had a hell of a run upwind to get back to the beach that quickly !!!. Unless someone else was setting up after we left.

Your OR one's are very similar to the original TD's. My 12 could be a bit twitchy and fold in on itself if the leading edge pressure had dropped. Once it folded, it was very hard to staighten it out again.

You can have a go on the Sonic next time I see you if you want. You don't appear to be slamming your kites down, so I assume you would not do it to mine

No free weekends for a while, but that last session should keep me smiling.

Simon

crut - 14-5-2007 at 14:54

Didn't the OR do it dance in the air after you'd done a front roll?

Noo Noo - 15-5-2007 at 07:09

Wow thanks Si I'll take you up on that offer - gently does it. I dont think I'll be about until first week in June. Might pop down on the Bank holiday WE to say hello if people are about.

Front Roll - I wish! Working on my back rolls and failing miserably at the moment. Try front rolls after or maybe next time out. Really loving it at the moment. Those Dyfi lagoons are just great for letting rip and trying whatever pops into your head.
OR's are not renowned for folding / inverting but I do know it happens. Very Flat kites the OR ONE's. Wish I knew what I did to cause it. Kite was near the edge, moving and powered too. Very strange. Thankfully it appears I got away with it.

shem - 15-5-2007 at 09:56

You may found it folded due to being out most of the day. Especially with temperature changes during the day, the pressure in your leading edge could have dropped.

jon d hat - 15-5-2007 at 18:57

I'm riding OR 1's 2006 models and never found them twitchy.. in fact one of the, if no the most stable bow i'v seen. Ask any one whose watched me ride, plenty of comments about how stable they seem to be. Also never had an issue pulling backloops.

I rode plenty of other bows in the 12 months following their release onto the market and after much deliberation, went for the 06 to avoid the one pump. To date, never had a bladder problem, and the only time they hindenberg is if there aint enough wind to fly em.

If I could have held on, I'd have deffo gone for the 07 Sonic...but 2 kites for £850 with 2 bar an lines... deal was done.9m is the sweeeetest thing but the 12 is a little slow on the turn. No comparison to the TD (which I have also riden)

Which model did you get 06 or 07?

Noo Noo - 16-5-2007 at 07:38

I've got 12m and 9m 2006. Extremely stable, solid in the air as you say. Huge range. Very floaty, I've no complaints at all. Tough too thankfully.

9m Wow, special little kite that one. Saturday was first time out with it.
12m Slow as you say, the bridle mod helps but I still like it.

Not being able to afford new kites I stumbled on these 2nd hand for a good price. So I'm more than happy with OR and have no intentions of changing for the immediate future. Must admit the new OR RISE looks interesting.

I never really considered the Slingy's. Cant say why but I've since spoken to a few people that weren't 100% with them. It seems Si was unconvinced too. However there seems to be a lot of praise for the bigger TD's.

Th 9m bowtieing (did I spell that right?) like that was very strange. Cant for the life of me think what happened. Pressure must have been a little low as Shem says but something else happened too there was a jolt just like a line breaking or something. Aaah well all's OK just need to get out again

Always liked the look of the Sonics and they will always have a place on the "possibles" list
