Sea Breeze
justal - 1-7-2006 at 10:40

It looks as though a sea breeze is kicking in.... Not a huge amount at the moment, but if the sun stays out and the temperature continues to rise we could have a useable wind by around 3pm... Fingers crossed.

We are coming to borth this friday for 1 week. For the sea breezes what are we looking for in the weather; obviously heat but what wind direction, weather etc. I dont want to miss anything so at least i can half plan a day.

cheers in advance

The sea breeze is VERY unpredictable but the best weather conditions are clear blue skies, fairly high temperatures and a W-NW wind anyway.

Even if a sea breeze does fill in it usually doesn't last that long, between 3pm and 5pm usually and it is likely that you'll need big kit (6m plus) to make the most of it., although sometimes if there is an underlying NW anyway it can be quite good.

It is also worth checking the estuary first thing in the morning just in case the katabatic wind that comes down the valley is working... I've just had a session out there in 25-30 knot winds whilst everywhere else has next to nothing... It does mean an early start though. Around 5am for me this morning.

Hopefully see you at the weekend.

By the way, the katabatic NE wind in the estuary has just been officially named Ivor!

It was about time it had a name as he is like an old friend to those who know him.

AL thats just sad

justal - 4-7-2006 at 13:37

All the best winds have a name... everyone knows Eric, so Ivor seemed appropriate as the Welsh alternative.

justanna - 4-7-2006 at 15:09

Maybe it should be Ifor then if we are getting all Welsh about it!

AndyW - 4-7-2006 at 15:21

Well I agree with Al, it should havbe a name and Ivor sounds good to me

AndyW - 4-7-2006 at 15:23

I can just imagine the alert when Ivor 'goes off' and the theme tune calling us to the water....

mNeil - 4-7-2006 at 16:26

Shaka - 6-7-2006 at 17:36

thanks for the info - looking good for the w/e up to about monday/tuesday.

Long range (www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/avnpanel1.html) looking more settled but cant moan if we can get a sail and even maybe a surf if anything left from the wind.

See you guys on the beach. Goya + gaastra sails.

fingers crossed.

justal - 6-7-2006 at 17:39

I'll look out for you... I've just got back from a little session now.. Nothing great, just a warm up for the weekend!... I usually walk across to the beach with my kit on a wheelbarrow, but will be out sailing with Gun sails and wearing a black ice-hockey helmet.

Lets the the wind arrives on cue.

I wonder if Shaka is here in Borth yet... the wind is filling in nicely at the mo.... Currently averaging 20 knots and sunny too... Should be a good start to his weekend.
