Surfing and other FON sports at Tarifa
mexican bandit - 4-5-2004 at 09:30

I'm about to be posted on a site in Algeciras, near Tarifa, for the next 10 weeks.

I was wondering if anyone had some advice on good surfing beaches in the area.

And then, as the place is a wind-kite-surfing paradise, I was after recomendations for places from where to take lessons and hire gear.

Cheers,

Bandit

Algeciras? You poor bugger, take a gas mask, the smell from the refineries is nauseating...

There is nothing but ferries and pollution in Algeciras. Drive about 20 mins to Tarifa...

For proper surfing there isn't a great deal, unless you get a good swell from a Poniente. Kit hire is really expensive by EU standards, take your own surf board if you can.

Kiting is what Tarifa does best, but it's suffering from overcrowding now.

Plenty of wind-and-kite-surf hire places along the beach, but the 'spin-out centre' (opposite Camping Torre de la Pena II) has the best reputation. Have a mosey around Tarifa Town too as many of the shops there have kite lessons and hire too.

Take a tent so you can spend every free day at Tarifa.

btw - I get cheap flights to Gib. Do you have a car and a spare room?

I'm quite busy during the week, but if you come down for the weekend I'll exchange a couch for some kiting lessons.

Work is next to the refinery. Few are the days it does not smell of sick or worse. And people live right next to the place.

Im there for 7 weeks from the end of June. I mainly windsurf but will bring my surfboard. Hope to find a good campsite. Maybe we will get a chance to meet up for a beer and surf.
