no wind and dodgy forecasts
bucski - 16-11-2003 at 17:31

headed over to ynyslas after carefully checking a few forecasts, which averaged about 14mph NW, but there was like, no wind at all!!! not a breath
How can they get it so wrong?
Checked xcweather before I went, which was showing 18mph at aberporth, then checked it again when I got back, showing
13.00 14mph
14.00 14mph
15.00 12mph
I can't see how this can be right when there was no wind at borth at those times, especially when there xcweather also indicated some wind indicated at valley further north, surely this data must be wrong?
sorry to be such a whingey git!!!

I'd say that sounds about right... When I checked the wind at about 2pm there was 14-15 knots. OK, it only hung around for half an hour or so before dropping off a little, but it must have stayed at around 11-12 knots as I was able to get up and riding with my 11m Wipika for a while. The forecasts yesterday (including mine) were all saying NW Force 3, so I'd say they were about right. if anything there was a little more wind than forecast.

xcWeather sounds as though they have got it right 12-14mph is very marginal even for a big kite really.

hi al

Where did you go out?
I was hanging around ynyslas from about 11 to about 2.30, and kept walking around the main beach to see if the NW had kicked in but couldn't find any wind at all, there was a guy there with a 4m blade and he couldn't get it in the air,
Is it that the main beach at ynyslas is sheltered from a NW sob sob, can't understand it
cheers

Ahhh... Well the wind suddnely kicked in at around 2.30pm.... Maybe it was you leaving that prompted it!!!

Ynyslas is a bit sheltered from a NW. and in actual fact there was a fair bit of northerly in it yesterday, so the estuary would have been evn more sheltered thanks to the great big hill behind Aberdovey!!

If you left at about 2.30 though it sounds as though you just missed it. It wasn't great though, so I shouodn't worry too much about it. A few others were out as well and we were all just about going with 11-15m kites. There wasn't enough wind to gain any ground upwind though.

oh well
booh, hoo, missed it
even a bit would have been great, I was there for about three hours wandering round and round praying for wind, the wind gods were obviously not favouring me!
glad you got out though at least someone was having some fun, did you go out nearer borth?
cheers

No, I went out just across from my house. It was looking good for a while with a nice 15 knot NW, but it dropped off so that there was only just enough. Still, I guess even that was better than the 3 hours of wandering you managed!

Mind you, this time of years its usually all or nothing really, so getting a good quality kiting day is fairly rare. I suppose we need bad days to maje the good days seem even better!

true enough, just the way it goes
think I'll have to give you a shout next time, as the wind gods must be on your side!
hope you don't think that the dodgy forecasts comment was aimed your way, i'm very grateful for your site and forecasts
all the best
