DAKAR 2008
nick-r - 27-12-2007 at 11:46

i'll personally be following the bikes....ktm's up front as usual

will marc coma be too fast and knock himself unconcious like last year or will he take the title back from cyril despres.?

1 of the ktm riders reffering to his engine last year said, "as long as i keep my speed below 100mph the motor should make it to the finnish"........many of the top riders have come to their end in the last few years on this and similar bike rallies(2 last year on the dakar). but non more famous than fabrizio meoni who died on the big ktm900 a few years back..
anyone thats seen footage of that guy riding through the desert on that ktm will understand why he died.(i know i did).

if anyone's interested>>>official site

hi Nick ; is it on the TV and what channel and when?
you up borth soon?

nick-r - 27-12-2007 at 12:44

as soon as i've glued the disco back together...

a clip from last years race.won by cyril despres after leader marc coma hit a tree stump at god knows wot speed and flew over the handlebars and suffered severe concusion and had to withdraw from the race.

stage13-bikes, Dakar2007

check the vid at approx 50 seconds in.it's all over for coma.he doe'nt even know where he is.....

shem - 27-12-2007 at 13:58

I fall off often enough just up the local forestry!!!!

nick-r - 28-12-2007 at 13:24

riding offroad and falling off go hand in hand.....the trick is.... "not falling off at speed" (to state the obvious)....especially if you're riding in forest..my own approach is never ride more than 50% when close to obstacles on loose, rough or wet ground.but i'm not a racer more a trundler.....

YE THE CCMS ROAD LEGAL, (well it was at last mot), its the 350 motox, bored out to 370, and made road legal, (lights horn and stop switch). Its a cheap old nacker really, but got loads of power, and solid build.

Her she is, maybe Ill do the Dakar on it one day, ( when I get round to sorting the Carb leaking)!

justal - 29-12-2007 at 09:12

There's a local company (whose website I maintain) sponsoring a Welsh guy on the Dakar Rally this year... I've just set up a page about it for them...

His Bike looks pretty cool.

Al.

you'll need all the fuel you can carry(and more) i think some of the stages are 350km.

will be following mick extances progress al....why hav'nt we got any riders that are capable of staying up front with the leaders though......shem you need to get that carb fixed and a bigger fuel tank for next year.....

shem - 29-12-2007 at 11:55

Maybe Ill just give it a miss, LOL, That lump of mine holds 15 litres and that makes it heavy enough all ready!

nick-r - 29-12-2007 at 19:04

repsol ktm 690 rally

why don't they make them for small people too....

small world. coincidence, call it what you will......just been over to the other side of birmingham to get a wheel bearing kit for the disco. i went on the ktm as the disco is now well and truly grounded.and while waiting to meet a guy who was bringing the bearing i get chatting to another motorcyclist who is a memeber of BAM.(birmingham advanced motorycle training).he turns out to be a mate of Mick Extance (britains fastest dakar rider)who is also part of the same motorcyce club...apparently he preps for the dakar in the welsh mountains..i know it's not quite the same as meeting someone who knows michael scumacher but strange all the same seeing as al mentioned him yesterday.

ball sack...Dakar 2008 has been canceled

oh well. here's to Dakar 2009.

shem - 4-1-2008 at 23:03

What a craper, maybe they should all come to pennal and do neumorous laps of the 7.5 mile loop up there. Just a suggestion.

nick-r - 5-1-2008 at 05:10

i'll probably come down and do a few laps with you shem (as soon as the car is sorted).,,,,i think everybody down there in portugal waiting for the start today must be mega peeeed off.......lots of time, money and organisation gone to waste and the chance of a lifetime for some of the privateers......personally i think it will spell the end for the race......afterall, who's gonna bother to prepare for next years race when it might just get called off minutes before the start.....

shem - 5-1-2008 at 09:40

Ye its grim, I read an article and even for private racers on motor bikes, they recon 40 grand is a absolute minimum, so I dread to think how much big companies spend!

nick-r - 6-1-2008 at 12:05

i heard VW lost £2.3 million on drivers entry fees alone.....other people had given up jobs to take part, remortgaged their houses...a challenger tank might be a good vehicle for next years dakar...thats should take some stopping..

nick-r - 3-1-2009 at 14:37
