El Gouna is ok if you dont like waves and will put up with constant chop Darren.Al goes somewhere there with waves so drop him a u2u........been once and once was enough for me, but each to his own + THEY DONT HAVE ANY DECENT BEER!!!!!!!!!

I actually like El Gouna, been 5 times now.

Town - fairly new purpose-built resort, very pretty, not a lot of night life, very safe - armed guards at the gates, they keep all the local riff-raff out so you don't get harrassed all the time. Stay at the Captains Inn at Abu Tigg Marina - top location. Reasonable choice of local restaurants - including a very respectable Indian. The beer does get a bit samey so remember your duty free! Not much to do apart from kiting, diving, snorkelling and lying in the sun.

Kiting - as Neil says, no waves. Flat water or chop depending on tide. The kiting area is a big lagoon, maybe 400m wide and several kilometres long. Water usually knee to chest deep, one year on springs it was too shallow to kite at low tide, so you had to walk across the lagoon and kite in the deep water. Reasonable swell there if you like that kind of thing. 3 kite centres to choose from, been to 2 and they're pretty good, kite storage, bar, loos, showers etc. It has got busier over the 3 years I've been going, but one day I counted 50 kites, and there was still loads of room if you hack upwind away from the centres.

So - no waves, but a great place to practise your latest tricks in the sun and shallow warm water. don't go July/August - its too bloody hot.

I've run a couple of "school" trips there. I'd have no hesitation going back - As a school. I think I'd try somewhere else if I was going free-riding.

Nice chilled out atmosphere in the evening. You should enjoy it, especially if you want to work on your flat water tricks.

hey there, i used to work in abu soma and we visited there, just wondering what the windsurfing is like there, any kiters seen any windsurfers around? what sort of strength was the wind?

I did see a couple of windsurfers when I were there. They didn'nt seem to be doing any good though.

It would need to be high tide or you'd have to sail outside the lagoon. The wind was anything from 10 to 30 odd knts.

As an ex windsurfer, I'm sure there're beter places to windsurf.
