Weather forecasts... what's the point?
justal - 29-8-2005 at 09:02

What is going on...forecasts have been a little wrong for today so far. All forecasts seemed to say the wind would ease from around 14 knots to next to nothing during the morning... In fact it has picked up and there has been plenty of wind around so far... lots of (un-forecast) rain as well though.

You just can't rely on them to plan your lives!!

looking at XC weather/wind map it wont be long till the wind drops in the Irish channel.
Lately ive favoured Theyr.net to Guru as it seems to be more reliable still not 100% though!.

XC weather was forecasting 14 mph for 7am, then 12mph for 10am and 7mph for 1pm (as was theyr and windguru)... infact i has gone from about 18mph at 7 to about 22 at 10am...Lets hope it continues as I might just have to go out again if it stays like this... Although it is pretty miserable out there now and I don't know if I can face getting into a wet wetsuit again today!!

I reckon I could do it, its easy all you say is, it'll either change or stay the same, be wet in some areas, where its not dry and it maybe breezy in parts! There you go, I get the job!

Its pretty easy most of the time. If you watch the clouds where you are it will give you a rough idea for the next six hours. What you want to see is a nice clear day with "mares tails " high in the sky, wind is coming ! I am in the Outer Hebrides, and we get sh*te forecasts. Keep a diary of whats going on during the day and you pick it up pretty quick. Its not bomb proof but, keep an eye on the cloud types, wind direction, and you get a better picture....For the city folk...if you see lots of umbrellas..its raining....

Trouble is for many people who have a 2-3 hour journey to the beach, 6 hours warning isn't enough!! And even for us who live on the beach when theres nothing but grey skies for days on end they don't give much away... We can still get wind all of a sudden though.

You can of course sometimes see what is coming from the clouds but as you say it isn't bomb-proof and it doesn't tell you what is going to happen later in the week, but then neither does the millions of pounds worth of equipment and computer models the met office use!!

Clouds are all well n good, but air/ land temperature, water temperature, the state of the tide and venturi effects all have an input to micro weather systems. Thats why it's so bloody hard to predict.

I have to say I tend to ignore the forecast and turnup anyway. If I didn't I would have missed some epic days. One thing they do (usually) get right is the direction, but we all know you might be sat on the beach all weekend.............waiting.....

It's only when you call it a day and go n get bevvied in the pub that things start to fill in. Ladt Stella has had her wicked way with you by then and board sports are a distant memory!
