My names Micky and I'll be coming to Borth next weekend. With me will be my girlfriend Zo' and my mates, Ash, Deb and there son Jude, Paul & Clare, John & Laura. We are all around 30 and all from Brum. None of us have surfed before but I had a Morey Boogie Board when I was a kid and Zo' & Deb have bodyboarded in Cornwall. My cousin has leant me his 6'6 Thruster and Ash has bought the same board locally, second hand. I don't know if these will be right to learn on but I guess we'll find out on the 4th! From the look of the travel forum many of you will be there, so keep an eye out for some none surfing Brummies and we'll meet up!

Good to have a new recruit to the 'Forces-of-Nature'!

A 6'6" probably isn't the best board to learn on as its a little small, but i shouldn't worry about it, it'll get you out in the water and enjoying yourself which is the main thing, and you'll get the hang of it evntually, it'll just take a litle longer than if you had a larger, more stable board.

I learnt on a 6'3" board, and I can surf OK now, so it isn't impossible on a short board.

Al's right... It would be easier on a longer board. theres a post somewhere else about someone new to surfing and what board would be best. I'll see if I can find it for you and direct you to it.

Bascially, longer boards are generally more stable and therefore more forgiving of poor technique than shorter boards. A general beginners board tends to be something like a 7'6" minimal.

Just stick with it though, you won't regret it as surfing is the best sport around.

Hello there Micky,
Hmm a 6' isnt the best of boards to start on I must admit, Mini mals tend to be somewhat easier for your first stand-up, its not too short not too long. But like Al says, its not impossible to learn on a short board, although it is extremly hard! Stick to it though..
