Hi all, is there anyone who has or knows about electric guitars? I'm thinking of getting the guitar below for my birthday. Can anyone tell me if it's any good?

Thats an amazing price, it is almost too good to be true! Honestly, Ive been playing the guitar since i was 10 and thats a certainly good price!

Plus Angry_Apple that's yet another thing we have in common! You already play and i'm just about going to start playing.

Oh yeah there is one letdown about the guitar, because i have to order it from the US the shipping cost is about £60! I know...it's so enoying! That makes the price up to around £180 instead of £119!

How did you learn how to play? Did you do it on your own or by tutoring?

There was a left handed air guitar for sale on e-bay a couple of months back.

Apparently it was in good nick - it was difficult to tell from the picture (kinda looked like someone's carpet!).

The guy was forced to sell it because an accident stopped him playing.

I started with a tutor for about 2 years, then I taught myself some stuff up until now! I find it so much easier when you teach yourself, because you have enough time and you dont have to learn certain things a certain times. Airborne, I advise you to teach yourself as much as possible, but when It gets complicated, you can always call a tutor.
Ive started playing the drums too, and thats the hardest thing EVER to play!

You can get guitar tabulature for almost any song you want. I taught myself to play and used these sites a lot. Just print off the tab and away you go!

Thanks for the info, i was thinking of just learning by myself, i've got no time nor patients to listen to a tutor, plus it would take up yet another day of the week.

Also thanks to Sinister, those websites sound interessting, it's just what i need at this time, plus i want to play along and be able to play some songs.

I know this might sound stupid, but can you strum on an electric guitar (just checking), and do you know where i can get a print out of the chords. By the way, how do you know where each chord is on the guitar?

Some of the sites I posted have chords and some have tab. The basic open chords are easy to play (and you'd be amazed how simple some of your favourite songs are). You can get loads of books etc of how to play chords. If you want I can mail you a couple of diagrams of how to make the basic ones. (I'll include a couple of songs)

Tab is a good thing to learn - basically you have 6 lines on the page with numbers on. The 6 lines are the strings and the numbers represent the fret where you should hold down the corresponding string. Like this:

-2-------------------------------------------------
-0------------------------------------------------
-0-----------0--------------0------------------------
-0---------------0------0----------------------------
-3-------------------3-----------------------------

You then play along from left to right. If all the stings are marked with numbers you strum, the example above is all strings strummed with the top & bottom strings held at the third and the second string down held at the second (a G chord by the way). Then the same chord shape but the top string picked, the next 2 missed out, then a little trip up and back down the bottom 3 strings.

be careful which way the tab is written as the way sinista has written his g chord example is the complete opposite to how I read tab!

I've been playing the guitar on and off for a steady 22 years! But I really started putting the practice in about 10 years ago!

That Squire Strat is a cracking guitar for a starter and you cannt go far wrong with it. Another option that you might want to go for is, go down to your local guitar shop and see what they've got. THere are a lot of small struggling guitar companies at the moment that are making some superb guitars and at a fraction of the price of the bigger companies (Fender, les paul, PRS etc...)

Thats how I got my electric about 11 years ago.. I saw it and fell in love!... and its still going strong.

As for learning it.... I say this to everyone.... you NEED to practice about 1-2hours a day... EVERYDAY... and in about 6 months you'll start to understand the huge theory that is the fretboard! There are hundreds are web sites out there that give free online lesson which will get you started.

I hope you stick with it! Its well worth it!

i been playing for 20 years now, rock guitar, i used to put in 8 hours a day when i was at college.
That is ridiculously cheap for a reasonably quality package.

Wow! You guys do play a lot! At the moment i've had loads of coursework so i haven't been playing much. I've got to the stage where i can play backing guitar (guitar 2) in a band that i've formed. We have a drummer, a basist, a lead guitarist and me!

All this i have achieved without lessons...but i definately do need more practice, like everyday, and lessons if i want to progress.
