i fancy a new board but am not sure what to get...... im looking for something freeride ish that will hold a sail 6m to 8 m and be uphaulable for an 85kg. i keep thinking --- techno 273 as they are cheap as chips but are they old and past it ????? plus i dont want a carve as everyone at the beach i sail at has one and i fancy something different. any ideas...... i recon this is the best time to buy as the shops seem to be trying quite hard to sell stuff.
p.s. first post, hope i can remember my login!

HI Liam,

Which board are you replacing/complementing?

I'm not sure if the Techno 273 will take an 8m sail - will check my old surfstore catalogues tonight. I think it was superseeded by the Techno E medium which badexcuseforasailor (aka BEFS for obvious reasons!) sails.

BEFS - what's the biggest sail you've used on yours

Cheers

Nick

The biggest sail i use on my 263 medium evolution is a 7m board is rated up to a 7.5. They do a evolution large with volume of 135lts that takes an 8 maybe that would be a better idea.

Carves are very nice boards but if your a bit heavy handed they are very easy to ding friends had 3 repairs in a year on his. My techno 283 is 3 years old and not a single ding and its been dropped a few times and still no dings

i am moving down from an old starboard start 180, and can waterstart and gybe (most of the time) a techno 283 would be a very affordable choice but some have said that it is quite big. what is it like in a blow?? im changing from the starboard start as i ripped the fin out of it using it in a force 6 with a 5m and colliding with a submerged rock....... not the smartest thing ive done but it gave me a good excuse to try and get to the next stage in my sailing.

badexcuseforasailor - 5-1-2004 at 19:42

The 283 is a big board if the water isnt' flat things can get very bouncy, I normally sail inland and use 8.5,7.0 and 6.3 sails on it once things get windier than that I changed down to my 263 evolution.

If you go to www.surfstore.co.uk they have lots of past tests for boards

thanks for the tip about surfstore, im leaning toward the techno e large, i recon it would be better to spur me on to improving my technique and getting a smaller board.
just have to find one at a good price now !!

Hopefuly Wes will read this thread as he's got a 135lt techno and he used an 8m with it when I saw him down in poole ( I knew I'd seen someone sailing one just couldn't remmber )

what about the new mistral screamer, first board to get 10/10 in a uk review?

Wes - 8-1-2004 at 12:36

Yep, do indeed run a Techno E Large. I love it, flys along with the 8.0 (Tush Heckler) and I can about control it with a 5.7 b4 it tries to take off. The only problem with it is the stupid bloody footstraps, complete nightmare!
I tried a 145ltr JP freeride thingy, but allthough I liked it and it got going super early, it was a bit of a dog over chop. The nice thin tail on the techno seems to make it better for a typical coastal location.
Oh, and I managed to ding the rail on mine by lifting it out of Poole Harbour, stubbing my toe on a rock, falling over and smacking it into the sea wall - doh!
Still, even then it was only a very small ding........

Only a small ding on my board I think you'll find Wes!....still as it's been a year since I've been on it I guess you could be entiltled to think it's yours

Wes had suggested the e Large as a good board to improve my technique moving from a hi-fly Maxx. I also wanted a board that was about 130-140L. The Techno seemed ideal...but I see now there was an ulterior motive

Damn, Thats just not sporting. When did you start reading this forum? I should be allowed to get away with sneaky, underhand things like that......

Looks like I have some serious sucking up to do!

P.S. You posted at 16:09, shouldn't you have been working? Be nice to me or I will tell your boss
