Hiking - Walking: Staverton and Orford Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: Foggy, frosty start then sunny with light winds Max Speed: Distance Covered: 5 miles (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)
Monday 3rd March - walks ***** – Staverton an Orford – Foggy and
frosty start then sunny with light winds.
Walk 1 – Early frosty walk at Staverton Thicks :)
With frost and fog forecast it was too good an opportunity to miss so not
to head over to the ancient woods, Staverton Thicks near Butley. I packed a
picnic last night, cover our van windscreen so we didn’t have to scrap
the ice and we left Felixstowe before 6.30 with a thin layer of fog! When
we reached Woodbridge the red sun was showing through the fog so if
anything we were a little late. The last bit of the drive past Rendlesham
was a nightmare as the low sun was right in our eyes! We parked up at the
small muddy lay-by near the footpath sign leading to the woods and got my
best foggy tree pics just leaving the van as there was no fog in the old
wood but it was very frosty and still wonderful, the pigs had just been
feed and were munching loudly and bitting at each other but no piglets yet!
We we reached the best part of the wood where the old trees are more spaced
out and look stunning! We continue down to the lake with its swan on the
icy water! We reached the solar farm and meet a friendly, noisy herd of
sheep with their backs covered in ice! We did a circuit around their field
enjoying the cold clear blue sky and peace and quiet, just brilliant! We
returned to the van having walked over two and a half miles in an hour!
Walk 2 – Orford along the River Alde :)
As it was so early we decided to drive over to Orford as it was only 4
miles away , after stopping to take some pics of the castle looking
brilliant set against a deep blue sky we found a parking spot in the main
street and set off for our second walk of the day reaching the Quay at nine
and the River Alde looked amazing, like a mirror with Orford Island looking
great tood with its old secret weapons research building standing out!
Despite my heel really playing me up as was Mags neck and back, we are a
couple of right crooks at the moment we set off along the River Alde path,
stopping to take some pics of the boat wrecks, we were going to turn back
at a style about ¾ of a mile but there was a cool path heading a little
inland over a couple of wooden footbridges which we decided to do. We
returned to the river path right in front of Havergate Island another
nature reserve and headed back past a boat moored up which made for some
nice pics as two swan swam past! It was a struggle now with me limping
along, I am definitely getting fed-up of the heel now! Just before reaching
the Quay we headed inland coming out in an old farm with some lovely old
barns which have been turned into some brilliant but I suspect expensive
houses! In fact there are some really lovely properties in Orford. We were
pleased to reach the van, both knackered after walking 5 miles so far
today! We were both hungry so parked up on the quay to have our picnic
lunch, a tad early at just before 11!
It was then the drive home to sort out a few pics to send to the TV weather
and I was lucky enough to get one on ITV;s About Anglia, great to have
Chris Page back after his holiday to South Africa! I even managed to do my
exercises in the afternoon but it was hard work and I did doze off in the
middle!
