Thursday 3rd October - walk ***** – Helmingham Hall deer park – sunny periods.

After two full-on windsurfing sessions I decided to make the most of a lighter wind day, packing a picnic and leaving Felixstowe at 10 on a mystery tour but Mag quickly quessed where we we heading, Helmingham Hall for a walk around the deer park:) The weather didn’t start well with light rain, then the Grundisburgh road was closed so we had a detour around some lovely Suffolk country lanes:) We came out by Helmingham Church and had to turn round to go to the entrance to the hall but that had closed in September so we had to park in the small church carpark under a large horse chestnut tree, I have never seen so many conkers and collected a bag full! The footpath to the deer park start at the church and is open all the time and is a well marked short grass footpath around the park:) You could not go near the house so continued through a gate in the deer fence and hardly saw anyone, a lovely old boy out on a walk who had worked on the estate and a few photographers with big lenses out to capture the deer! We spotted our first large herd of fallow deer in the distance keeping an eye on us. The path continues around the edge of the park and we saw a lone deer sitting under a tree, a little sad really, then onto the large obelisk where we sat to take in the view and spotted a small herd of deer behind which wandered off to join a larger group but not before a paddle in a small lake:) The weather was improving now and we sat in the quiet wishing we had brought our picnic but never mind so we carried on past the house and more deer before leaving the park, we then had to walk along the road back to the van as the sun made a welcome appearance:) We then took our picnic past the church back into the park to sit on the grass and watch the deer action, just lovely! The heron returned to the small lake so after lunch I walked to the small lake to take some nice pics of the deer in the front of the house, there were a couple of large male deer which ended calling but no rutting, a friend had visited at 6.30 this morning and saw them rutting! It was time to head for home after a really fantastic day out:)
