17th July 2024 Hiking - Walking: River Gipping walk Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: 20 Sea Temperature: Weather: Sunny and hot :) Max Speed: Distance Covered: 5.19 miles (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Wednesday 17th July - walk **** – River Gipping, Barham to near Pips Ford – sunny and hot. The summer returned again today, sunny and pretty hot, as we had check up at the dentists at 10.20 in Walton it was a good opportunity to get out in the van somewhere different for a walk:) I had time to do my exercises in the garden before breakfast, then pack a picnic and head off. The dentist visit was as good as usual, verry thorough and I had a plan so headed off to Ipswich hoping to park somewhere around Yarmouth Road and walk along ther Gipping to the Orwell, past the waterfront to have a picnic in Holywells Park but we could not find anywhere to park so decided to get away from the busy street of Ipswich and ended up driving down Paper Mill Lane, past the burnt out Fisons warehouse where Mag worked many years ago! We turned into Barham Pits where I fished and won many competitions back in my youth and boy has that changed. The pits were run by the GAPS but it has been taken over and how has an otter fence around the whole area, not very pleasing on the eye but at least it keeps the fish safe! There was loads of cars paked but we didn’t see anyone fishing? We spoted a footpath sign on the road in so parked there and walked down some steep steps to come out bt pit B, we followed the fence and the path passes through pits A and B coming out by the River Gipping which was looking in surprisingly good nice and clear, full of weed and fish:) Under the railway bridge, this is the main Norwich/London line which is very busy and come to our first bridge at Great Blakenham with two nice lads fishing and actually spoke to us:) The footpath continues past some nice cottages as we amble along quickly reaching Shamford Lock, another old fishing venue run by the GAPS where the river open up and becomes wide and deep! Then past the lock and Causway Lake to a wheat field that has taken a bit of a battering and has been laid flat! We make it to the lovely old mill at Baylham, sadly now boarded up with families enjoying the rare breeds farm and we spot several interesting animals:) We couldn’t find anywhere for our picnic but speek to a River Gipping volunteer who says there is a sit by a wood bridge 10 minutes further along so carry onto there for a top picnic in the peace and quiet with a buzzard flying overhead! I spot a large chub before we set off back to the van, nearly 3 mies in the heat, it was slow going but we make it covering just over 5 miles and looks like its going to be even warmer tomorrow!
