6th July 2024 Windsurfing: Levington Wind Direction: WSW Wind Stength: 10/25 Surf / Sea State: river chop and smooth Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: Squally showers Max Speed: 19.34 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 9.50 miles (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Saturday 6th July – Windsurf ** River Orwell at Levington – squally showers! Foil – 19.34 knot max , 17.44 knot ave, 4.93 knot hour, 15.18 knot mile, 15.77 km., 15.21 knot alpha. Starboard Freeride 150 and a Evolution Freeride foil with a Tushingham Storm 5.2. Well we didn’t expect today weather, it looked a day of sunshine and showers with a westerly so we headed over to Levington Marina arriving at 10.30, Mag came too, Robert was already there but it did not look very promising as the rain fell:( Mag had her breakfast, we had a chat with Robert I the van as the rain continued to come down, shame really as a really good breeze form maybe wsw? The rain eased so we were tempted to rig, Mag even set off on her walk at midday, the rain returned so I put my wetsuit on and waited, hoping Mag was sheltering somewhere, we were both nearly ready to launch when a huge black cloud was moving down the Orwell pretty fast so we thought it best to wait, an old barge was slowly making its way to Felixstowe docks. I was reading my book when the bad weather arrived with heavy rain, squally too, I was glad I was not out o the water but was concerned about Mag but there was nothing I could do but wait for her to return. In the end Robert got fed up of waiting so packed up and was about to head for home when Mag returned like a drowned rat. She had walked 3 miles around the bay I the worst of the weather and had really enjoyed it, once you are wet you are wet, luckily she had her winters coat but her trousers were soaked! I then mad a yummy egg sandwich as the rain eased and the wind picked up so I thought I would give it a try even though the tide had now changed and was going out. I de-rigged my 6.5 and quickly set up my 5.2 and launched with only light rain. The foil did not feel right so I returned to check for weed, nothing? In fact something was amiss as I struggled to fly even when the gusts hits and it wouldn't gybe touching down half way around. The wind was particularly patchy and I did come ashore to check my foil again to see if any screws had come loose, nothing? Then I had a few good runs with three good gybes so I don’t know what went wrong before. The sun even made an appearance but the wind eased again so I headed ashore and called it a day! A quick shower followed by a cuppa I the van as another barge sailed past, we even had a call from our so I Surrey, it was raining on him too! With another black cloud approaching I managed to pack up before the next lot of rain arrived! So as interesting day with some great memories, more showers tomorrow so am not sure about sailing?
