15th June 2024 Windsurfing: Levington Wind Direction: SW Wind Stength: 15/30 Surf / Sea State: river chop and smooth Air Temperature: 15 Sea Temperature: Weather: Mainly cloudy with some squally heavy showers Max Speed: 18.93 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 19.50 mile (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Saturday 15th June – Windsurf *** River Orwell at Levington – mainly cloudy with heavy rain. Foil – 18.93 knot max , 17.60 knot ave, 7.54 knot hour, 15.58 knot mile, 31.84 km., 16.21 knot alpha (year PB). Starboard Freeride 150 and a Evolution Freeride foil with a Tushingham Storm 5.2 I learned on Facebook yesterday that there were 50 classic boats at Levington Marina both yachts and motor cruisers heading day today for some racing on the Orwell so we thought it was a good idea for me and Mag to head over to watch them:) With high water at 6.49 dropping until low water at 12.40 so not ideal for a windsurf foil but you can sail out of the marina channel easily, it only took me 10 tacks today:) We arrived at the marina just before ten for breakfast with no sign of any old boats but there was a good onshore breeze blowing easily 25 knots so after breakfast Mag went on her walk to Loompit Lake and beyond before the forecast heavy rain arrived. This left me to set up my foil board quickly as the tide was dropping fast, once again I took a chance with my 5.2 which once again was OK although it is gusty as usual on the Orwell and the old yachts had started to leave to head over to the start of the first race over on the corner where the water is pretty lumpy! I was just in time to launch from the usual spot ad was quickly in the deeper water of the marina channel but the wind had eased back as I made it too the deeper water. It did fill in and I had loads of fun sailing diagonally across the corner surrounded by may old yachts sailing in some challenging conditions and I could get up really close too! I got some cracking gybes too, so much easier with a sail sail, I got a pleasing 16 knot alpha with all the best over 14 knots, my best mile was 15.58 which included 4 gybes! I spotted Mag over on the beach, I later learned she was collecting shells and was lucky to get back before the rain arrived, its not much fun windsurfing in the rain! I think the first race was just across the corner but then they seemed to head to Felixstowe docks so I decided to sail up there too, the broad runs back were challenging in the lumpy river with some good gusts coming through. There were now loads of old motor cruisers lining up for a race and the smelly police launch nearly reversed into me! I was relived to reach the flat water in front of the marina and had a good run towards Pin Mill, I would have had a few more runs here as it was really good but after two full-on sessions at The Manor I was shot to pieces so decided to call it a day and headed back, this was definitely the right decision as the wind picked up to well over 30 knots and the heavy rain arrived. The first squall arrived while I was in the shower but I managed to get back to the van in the dry before the next squall arrived while we were having lunch, pretty exciting it was too and delayed me packing up for awhile! So another top day despite the poor weather with another breezy day tomorrow but after sailing three days in a row covering 70 miles I am not sure about tomorrow, especially being Fathers Day and we are expected to see the lovely Maeva?
