4th September 2019 Windsurfing: Bradfield Wind Direction: WSW Wind Stength: 15-25kts Surf / Sea State: Swell Air Temperature: warm Sea Temperature: warm Weather: Sunny Max Speed: 27.99 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 11.8 (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Couldn't make Point Clear tide where the pro's were sailing so headed for the nearer Bradfield with 6 others. Wind was Cross off, wind shadow 50 metres, with plenty of water at 2pm. 6 turned up and the wind was howling on the far side with white water. James went out on 5.7 / 120 and came back immediately to change boards to 95L said he was overpowered. Was tempted to foil with Steve and Joe - but changed to fin on that confirmation. Others on fin rigged 6.5 so went with 6.7/120 Fox (first windy sail on the board so evaluation time versus 125 Bolt) First thing I noticed in the wind shadow was how wobbly the board was in no wind compared to the Bolt 125. The Fox 120 is narrower old school style. Joe and Steve on 4.5 / foil were going well but looked overpowered in the middle rough water. Jeez soon as I hit the wind band the Fox was off, though had to force it off wind. 6.7 was way over in the middle with huge swell so the first run was a nightmare thru the swell in a big gust so was well happy to crash out the other site in the calmer waters. Cranked the sail down more outhaul, loosen the footstraps an game on. The board gybes better than the Bolt IMOH, just because the pin tail dont bounce in the rough water so much. It rides very smooth thru chop, again the pin tail old school shape. Think the Bolt is a better board for going thru lulls as the Fox stopped immediately the wind gusts eased. Pete was trying is luck for flat water on the Holbrook bit, for the GPS stuff. Thought about it, but going so far downwind on a 120L worried me getting back up. With hindsight the wind kept shifting directions so could have tried my luck down there. Had a couple of GPS runs but only in the rough water, whilst James was wave riding the huge swell in the middle. I started chasing Joe on foil and blitzed him, but av to says he was very fast and must have been hitting close to 25kts as he headed me up forcing the pass downwind. Steve was using a old school Art 4.5 slalom sail with adjustable head - exactly the same shape as the current "foil" sails! Just shows, what goes around comes around! I am now on a pin tail board after years fat back boards. Impressed with Fox 120 in the chop but need to set foot straps better, maybe a little more outer for the flatter water. Pretty much the perfect day, if there was no wind shadow. |
