6th March 2019 Hiking - Walking: Circuit 4 – A Travers les Alpages (Bernex) in Fra Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: sunny periods Max Speed: Distance Covered: 4.32 (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Wednesday 6th March – Snow shoe ***** Circuit 4 – A Travers les Alpages (Bernex) in France – sunny periods. 4 hours 15 minutes out, 4.32 miles covered. Second night in the ski carpark at Bernex, the lorry emptied the rubbish bins at 6.15 but apart from that it was OK. Not much blue sky today and the carpark seemed quieter than yesterday but when we left there were very few spaces left. We were just thankful to being going somewhere calm and peaceful today so after breakfast and a quick look around the ski shops we drove the short distance to Trossy a traditional hamlet with cows in barns to do a snow shoe walk we did three years ago again. Parking by the Pont de Morgon (1021m) with picnic, tripod and gps packed we set off at 11.40 walking up the road to Les Chaulets (1100m) where the tarmac ends and the snowy forest track begins. Snow shoes on we climbed steadily following the mountain stream, I stopped to take some blurry water shots but sadly they are not brilliant, it can be a bit hit and miss getting the timings, right? We turn right, away from the stream and out of the pines and get to see the high mountains surrounding us, looking good with the sun trying its hardest to make an appearance. At La Bonne Eau (1325m) you pass one of several old summer barns as this is where the cows come to graze in summer. You come to the first large wooden cross with just the most amazing views all around, high rugged mountains with Lac Lemen far below with not the slightest hint of a breeze. There was actually another lady here enjoying the view having her lunch so we decided to stop for our picnic, sitting away from her under the large lichen covered cross. Refreshed we walked up steeply and soon find the well-marked path again. It is actually used for mountain biking in the summer, a bit radical for us. We had already seen two ski tourers heading down, much better skiers than us! We get the first sighting of the pistes/lifts of Bernex and we are happy to be here in absolute quiet, just the sound of crunching snow underfoot:) Dropping down to Le Tirou (1295m) for more barns and another cross where we stop for dessert, a chocolate bar and an orange:)There is not as much snow this time and as we head lower we keep having to take the snow shoes off. We pass the lovely old chalet we fell in love with last time and end up coming out near the remote button lift on the blue run we skied yesterday. It’s a short walk down the road before crossing a little bridge to complete the last section back to the van down a steep, icy in places, path with no snow shoes on! Having been out for 4 hours 15 minutes covering over four miles we didn’t fancy driving far so just drove up the road we walked first thing and parked at Le Chautets near the stream with nice views down the valley. Cuppa and last cake time, could be a quick cake shop tomorrow. There was a couple of mini buses near us and then about 50 snow shoers appeared and walked past, never seen anything like it. A young kissy couple in keep fit gear started a walk at 6.15 and got back in pitch darkness an hour and a half later, lets hope they had head torches, it takes all sorts:) We are now again all by ourselves out in the middle of nowhere, fingers crossed there are no bears here. It could be our last day in the snow as we will probably drive down to the Lac tomorrow:( Photo Gallery Here |
