Thursday 17th January - bike **** – Felixstowe to Falkenham Church – sunny, windy and cold.

Although windy and sunny today the temperature has nose dived so windsurfing is out of the question. I’ve had a good start to the year on the water this year but that could be it for a while. Lucky we are heading to the mountains for a month in February:) So with wall to wall sunshine Mag and I decided to man-up, wrap – up and bike up to our favourite Fakenham Church in search of snowdrops. Just after midday with flask and sandwiches packed, we set off to the cliff top at the end of the road to a stunning view of glistening sunshine on the calm sea. With the wind offshore, we were lured into a false sense of security as we cycled along the sheltered prom. Then after The Dip we reached the golf course and hit the wind gusting to 30 knots and only 3 degrees but it was only my hands and later my toes that got cold! It’s not much fun biking into a gale but the scenery is still lovely. We make a quick stop at Felixstowe Ferry for Mag to adjust her head wear before setting off on the Deben river path and out into the countryside. Despite yesterday’s torrential rain the path was not too muddy but wobbly in the gusty wind making my eyes water as usual. It was again a great sky for taking pictures but it is a little disconcerting at the moment as I have just got, posterior vitreous detachment which is a small tear in the retina, not a sight losing problem but I have a blurry smudge of blood in my right eye which makes looking through the camera view finder a bit off-putting:( Fingers crossed it will disperse in time? Turning off at Kings Fleet we passed loads of geese and swans grazing in the farmers fields! Avoiding as many puddles as possible to reach the tarmac road and then it’s only a mile to the church and as we enter the gate to the churchyard, we see that we are in luck and the snowdrops are out:) We always say that we are visiting Emily Smyth when we come here for lunch. Sadly, Emily departed this life in 1877 and our favourite seat is next to her memorial and sheltered by the church with stunning views down to the Deben. After taking some pics of the snowdrops we have a hot cuppa and yummy cheese and pickle sandwich:) Refreshed it was time to head for home over a variety of footpaths and country lanes stopping off at Morrisons for some bits and pieces. I checked the local paper and discovered I have yet another pic in of Mag’s back:) In the end we were out over two and a half hours covering 12 miles making the most of a blustery winters day:)
