Windsurfing: Ynyslas Estuary Wind Direction: NE Wind Stength: 20-25 knots Surf / Sea State: Flat Air Temperature: 10ºC Sea Temperature: 14ºC Weather: Sunny Max Speed: Distance Covered:
Another good day in the estuary. Once again everyone was strugling to get
onto the beach because of the sand dune at the entrance, but I made it OK,
although on the way back out some fools were stood in the way so I had to
stop right in the deepest part of the sand and therefore got a little
stuck. It didn't take long to get out though.
I rigged my big kit (6.3m sail and 99 ltr board), which was fine to start
with, but the wind soon got up and although I could still hang on, it led
to some pretty exciting, completely maxed out speed runs across the
estuary. A few others were out with 5.5m(ish) sails, and they were
overpowered at times too. I spent most of the time sailing on the same line
as a guy from S. Africa, and we had some gun speed runs next to each other.
Nigel from 'Stoves and Stuff' was out, and helping out a friend who was
fairly new to windsurfing. Everyone seemed to have a good time. In
retrospect I wished I'd rigged something a little smaller and a little
faster, I think my 5.1m Tomahawk sail would have been perfect.
Paul and Tim were at the beach too, and Paul went kite-surfing. He was
doing OK for a while, a little overpowered, but managing to control it,
then on one run back across the estuary, I saw him get launched
uncontrollably into the air, and from where I was it looked as though he
was going to land face first at high velocity on the sand. I bore away and
headed straight towards him as whatever happened it looked as though he was
going to needd some help, and if he landed on the sand he was going to need
an ambulance... Luckily he landed face first in the water, and managed to
control the kite before causing himself any real damage. I helped him land
his kite as the incident had scared him a little. His face was a it red and
stinging from the impact, and he probably needed clean underwear, but
otherwise he was OK... It could have been a lot worse though.
I was sialing well today and didn't actually get wet for the first couple
of hours. I must have mad over 100 consecutive gybes without once falling
in, and often without losing much speed either.
All in all and excellent day and just about as good as it gets in the
estuary.
