A bit of a 'Monday Morning' moment to start with. Got to the beach nice and
early just as it was getting light. there wasn't quite as much wind as I
was hoping for with it hovering around 20 knots so I rigged my big kit.
First attempt at rigging and the mast wasn't put together properly. It was
only about 5mm out but I've seen peole learn the ard way not to go out like
that so I had to release the downhaul and star again. Second attempt and I
snapped my downhaul rope. Third time lucky.
However, by now it had started to pour with rain just in time for me to get
changed (I knew I should have got changed at home). Anyway, at least my
wetsuit was dry and I had brought my hooded rash-vest with me as it was the
only one that was dry and not too smelly... That was until I got it out of
the front of the van and managed to drop it as I did. Right into a dirty
wet, smelly puddle. I tried to catch it as it fell, but only managed to
stumble and stand on it making sure it got REALLY wet and mudy!... I can
tell you it is not a pleasant experience putting an absolutely dripping wet
rash vest on.
I'd also somehowlost my speedos between the house and the beach so had to
go out commando... I still haven't found them so if anyone sees them
they're mine!!
Next I had to adjust my helmet so that it would fit over the hood and then
at last it was time to get on the water. By now the tide was quite high and
breaking on the pebbles so it was a tricky launch followed by a battle out
through the shorebreak... At this point I realised that whilst pfaffing
around with the size of my crash helmet I had forgotten to do my wetsuit
up... Not recommended at the best of times but certainly not recommended at
8am on a cold wet December morning in Wales... Especially when the high
tide makes getting back to the beach and launching again a little tricky!
Still, once I had my wetsuit on properly and got back out there I was at
least well powered up and had a good session blasting around in the waves.
Highlight of the session was a really good back loop attempt. I didn't land
it but I got most of the way around and did get a feeling for the landing.
