Well what an afternoon. Been waiting for a day like today for ages. Got
down the club about 3pm. Rigged up, but as rigging got hit by a squall and
got soaked and my board got some BIG AIR lol. Luckily it wasn't damaged.
Though when checking it I noticed a small ding on the underneath. So, with
the help of the shop there, I got an 'Aquapatch' and repaired it. Its like
a stick on bit of fibre glass that dries in about 20 mins so that was cool.
Anyway wasn't sure whether to rig the 6.2 or 8.0 today. A lot of people
were out on smaller sails but I thought 'I wanna blast' so rigged the
8.0.
Well what can I say, spent 60% of the 3 hours I was there planing and it
was awesome. The only thing is I had two nasty experiences. The first
when I was uphauling in the middle of the reservoir and a bit of chop hit
me and I fell backwards off the board the sail coming down on top of me,
but as I fell my harness got hooked in lol so there I was, drowning
underneath the sail with no air lol. Managed to unhook underwater and swim
to the edge of the sail but seemed to take aggges. Shook me up a bit and I
had to have a beer to recover as I was 'winded'. After that I didn't use
the harness much but was planing without it cause I lost my balls, which
undoubtably led to my second horrid experience. Basically I was planing
standing right near the back of the board, knees bent u know just really
accelerating when, dammit, I got overpowered and fell off the back of the
board. So there I was in the water and my kit was like 20 metres away
'downwind' LOL. And I didn't have my bouyancy aid on either so shit my
pants a bit. Managed to eventually get the kit back though but was
knackered (i'm not a great swimmer lol).
Anyway, think I learnt a lot from todays session. I reckon safety is no.1
and I should get myself one of these cool looking bouyancy aid/impact
vests. 2nd is that I should have kept using the harness and not bottled
it. I feel like I've gone up a level today with the blasting though :p
