Thursday June 3rd.
The weather was not too good again. Chris arrived about 4pm and was certain
there was enough wind to slalom, rigged and rushed to the shore only to
find it was sub-planing conditions again. This is the 5th Thursday in a row
we’ve not had enough wind to wiggle a knat’s antenna.
The rain held off until 6pm when I arrived. Phil was loitering in the
clubhouse doorway with a grimace on hid face. The rain started to fall and
it was quite cold too, only about 14 ot 15 degrees. A few minutes later a
full 8 people were wandering around deciding to race or not. A vote of
confidence from Tim, Chris and Phil resulted in a two lap course from the
shore to the windsock and down to the buoy near the flag in the shallows of
the far island. The start marshalled held by John Andel. There were the
usual collection of collisions and ‘mountings’ as Tony puts it going
on, with Sandy I think doing a sail dunking too. Everyone went left, except
me, Tim who went right. I could see everyone was close together and turned
at the same spot. When we joined up again Phil Young was in the lead
again.
The lake was flat and the rains started to fall a little harder as the wind
tried to increase. By the far mark Phil still lead and messed the flare a
bit and pushed Tim very wide. Everyone caught up a little. Sandy was doing
well and Chris closed down on Tim a lot. On the run I sailed most of it
clew 1st and only flipped later which I thought might gain some ground, but
it didn’t. By the end of lap 1 Phil still lead and promptly asked if we
could call it a day now…
I don’t think the message got very far at all.
On lap two Tim overhauled Phil at the start of the upwind leg. Sandy was
still doing OK leading Annette with Mark a little way ahead. Chris fell
back a bit and was getting caught by John. It was a bit of a slow
procession.
The run down the lake finished it off. Tim won from Phil, Chris and John.
All were cheerful but left wondering “why am I here [in the rain]?” No
BBQ followed as frankly we’d got a bit cold and it was time to go!
