Day 1. (lock down)

Monday 24th March - bike **** - Two rivers, Deben to Orwell via Falkenham Church – Sunny.

After yesterday’s good windsurfing session at Levington and after Boris’s message on TV last night locking down the UK to fight this terrible virus it looks like that’s the end of getting on the water for a while:( Now this is going to hit me hard and we were thinking of ways of getting round the restrictions but in the end people’s health is far more important so we will stay at home or go for walks or bike rides away from people as much as possible! After today’s bike ride I must admit it would be safer if I took my windsurfing gear to Levington and windsurfed on the Orwell probably alone than biking around Felixstowe but I think if I posted a session on the GPS site at the moment my name would be mud, so time to forget the windsurfing and hope we can get back to normal as quickly as possible – so please follow the guidelines and stay fit and healthy!

So, to avoid any confusion this is from the NHS website.

Stay at home to stop coronavirus spreading
Everyone must stay at home to help stop the spread of coronavirus.
You should only leave the house for 1 of 4 reasons:
• shopping for basic necessities, for example food and medicine, which must be as infrequent as possible
• one form of exercise a day, for example a run, walk, or cycle – alone or with members of your household
• any medical need, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person
• travelling to and from work, but only where this absolutely cannot be done from home
These 4 reasons are exceptions – even when doing these activities, you should be minimising time spent outside of the home and ensuring you are 2 metres apart from anyone outside of your household.

That’s me off my soapbox so with the fantastic sunny weather continuing and with my exercises done in the garden, my boom repaired it was time to take the bike out for my daily exercise! With an apple in my pocket I headed down to the prom which was much quieter than usual and also there was a lack of cars, not a 100% but not too bad for the first day of lockdown which I am sure will get tougher in the following weeks. Mag had already had her early morning walk so stayed at home so it was a little lonely all by myself:( I biked along the prom giving everyone a wide berth stopping at several places to take pics! With the tide high the waves were breaking on the breakwater at the Fludgers as I followed the road around to the Dip which was even quieter! Again, the waves were crashing up very high on Bawdsey beach as I arrived at Felixstowe Ferry. After a quick trip around the boat yard it was out on the River Deben path. At Kingsfleet I stop to take a pic of the daffodils, a tractor working in a field with hundreds of Gulls as an Apache helicopter flies over! Then I cycle all alone right up to Falkenham Church where I eat my apple enjoying the view down to the Deben:) As it’s a nice day I forgot my gloves, a bit chilly on the hands! I carry onto Kirton, then Trimley down Grimston lane to our favourite tree lined path with views down to Levington. Then through the docks which are quieter than usual and all the way to the dock viewing point where the beach is all fenced off as there is heavy plant reinstating the beach. Then onto a deserted Landguard beach where I spot a group of Linnets before heading back to the prom and home! So a top bike ride being out for 3 hours 15 minutes covering 18.60 miles and would have been 5 stars if Mag had been with me!
