Sunday 24th May – bike **** - Mandriac to Narbonne – sunny – 14
n/miles
I decided to have a day off from windsurfing so lovely relaxed start to the
day overlooking the beautiful view across the etang. The view is
definitely better here than at Sigean as you can’t see the cement works!
We had our breakfast before packing up and heading round the etang, the
outskirts of Narbonne and out to the Mandriac lock on the Canal du Robine.
We got the poor old battered bikes off (I thought they would be in worse
shape as they have been severely battered by the wind and sand blasted the
last few days on the beach but it is the cover that has taken the most of
it!). We had already packed out lunch so went off along the tow path and
cycled the 5 miles to Narbonne centre. It is a really pretty route and the
centre of Narbonne is really nice, even has an old part. In a car you only
see the industrial and retail heaven but on the canal you only see the nice
stuff! We got off and walked through the market then cycled round the
historic centre, cathedral, narrow streets and section of roman road then
stopped on the new quay to have our lunch. Biked back and we had done 12 ¼
miles in total. We drove on the few miles to Gruissan and got our
favourite parking space in the woods and gareague overlooking the old town
and castle. We stayed here last time we were here but it was really bad
with mozzies as it was the autumn. Only a few here now so that is good. I
read and dozed in the sun :) We decided to go for a walk but Mag suddenly
realised she had lost her glasses – she had left them on the shelf above
the bed and they must have shot out when we braked and wobbled along the
track at Bages this morning! We hunted high and low and were about to give
up when I looked in his mast bag and they had slid in there!! You
couldn’t make it up! Walked through the vineyards and up onto the hills
overlooking the salt works and the beach. Out about an hour and it was
lovely. I took a few photos of the sunset through the woods behind us.
