Skiing: La Rosiere Wind Direction: Wind Stength: still Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: sunny morning/cloudyafternoon Max Speed: Distance Covered:
With the worst weather of the year forecast for the south east we
couldn’t have picked a worse day to be heading for the tunnel :( With
local radio warning only make essential journeys we left Felixstowe –
which had only light snow – and with 3 hour reported delays on the A12
just outside Ipswich we took the scenic back route to Colchester via
Lawford which although slow going was clear. Our next hold up was on the
M20 on the last 30 miles before the tunnel. We arrived late for our train
but managed to get another one quickly and made it to France without delay
and were very lucky to miss the chaos we heard about later where the tunnel
was closed and people stuck overnight !!!! We thought on arriving in France
the roads would improve as the French seem better prepared for bad weather
but the roads near Calais were horrendous with an inch of ice making things
difficult until you made the toll roads 20 miles out!!! Only trouble here
was the gritters were out in force, three abreast on the motorway slowing
the traffic down as they salted the roads. Made it to our Formula 1 hotel
ok and set off in bright sunshine and clear roads although the whole of
France was covered in snow. The trouble was because of the very low
temperatures everyone’s screen wash was frozen and most were driving
almost blind and had to keep stopping to clear screens or throw cupfuls of
water over as you crawled along. We made it to our Christmas tree/shop stop
at Chambery late at 5 and the last part of the journey went well as not so
much snow had fallen in the mountains!!!
After the two day trip down when we vowed never to go skiing again we
finally made it to our apartment at 9 in the evening being pleased that the
mountain road to La Rosiere was clear!!!
Sunday 20TH Dec
Awoke in our great apartment with wonderful views along the valley toward
Tignes to bright sunshine and blue skies with the horrendous journey
‘nearly’ forgotten !!! Being knackered we had a lay in, breakfast, then
lunch and only got a half day afternoon pass sadly by which time the clouds
were coming in :( It was still but cold we skied into La Rosiere and over
to the fort . The snow was excellent although visibility not brilliant. Rob
and I did some off-piste in the deep soft snow-I only lost my skis a couple
of time!!! Mag and Dan headed back to the trees of La Rosiere and home.
With bad light we decided to head back along the crap blue path to the tree
runs of Les Eucherts passing a couple being loaded into blood wagons :(
We then had a great time skiing the trees still managing to find fresh snow
to make new tracks :) My off -piste technique is rubbish but it’s fun
trying and at least most of the falls have soft landings !!!
