Windsurfing: Dyfi Estuary Wind Direction: SW Wind Stength: 18-25 knots Surf / Sea State: choppy Air Temperature: 13ºC Sea Temperature: 12ºC Weather: Cloudy Max Speed: Distance Covered:
There wasn't as much wind as expected, on the seafront it was measuring
around 20 knots but occasionally dropping to 13 and with huge, imposing
seas it didn't look too inviting out there.
AndyW couldn't get to Aberdyfi as the bridge was closed so he came here and
we headed down to the estuary where we rigged 5m sails, bug wave boards and
headed off across the channel, then carried out kit across the point and
into the main channel of the Dyfi Estuary. The tide was in full ebb and
with all the rain and flood water there was a good 10 knots current flowing
against the wind, so the effective wind was around 25-35 knots, perfect for
our 5m sails.
With flat water at either end of the shortish runs there was lots of gybe
practise and Andy was stoked at getting around most of them. I had some
nice fully planing gybes too, and then started doing duck gybes instead and
going for carving 360's. Unfortunately I didn't make any of the latter.
The chop in the middle of the channel was good fun too. We sailed out
towards the bar and then back downwind and played around in the channel for
a couple of hours before starting the long slog back to Abderfyi and the
the long walk across the estuary to our cars.
It felt as though we'd been on an adventure by the end of it though. A good
session all in all and well worth the effort.
