National Windsurfing Festival weekend, and a good result!
Fairly light winds, but the formula boards were going well. I'd come armed
with an old Fanatic Ultra Cat (longboard), so at least I had something that
wouldn't sink in the lulls!
1st race the board took a little getting used to, but despite a comic
begginer's catapult at the start as the board started railing I came back
in one piece around 40th place (from 200-odd). Not very good realy!
2nd race was better, but I think these raceboards take a lot more skill to
sail fast than I'd realised. 29th place though was a little better
(definitely NOT taking it seriously!)
Then my name was randomly called out for the Pro Tag-Team race, organised
by Louise Emmery), and suddenly I was racing for the RRD team (on their own
excellent) against the other teams wih Nick Baker etc... and things were
now rather more serious! We used an RRD 115 Crossfire(?) with an 8.5m sail.
No time for practise, but everything fell into place and I didn't make them
loose! In fact our team did rather well and won, and as the 'public' member
I won a shiney new ION wetsuit from Nick :-)
I have to say that the RRD board was a joy to sail, and I'm seriously
thinking of buying something like that now... (no I wasn't paid to say
that).
Third race was a bit more relaxed again, this time on my slalom set-up Bee.
Not quite enough wind, so only managed a low result again.
Fantastic day - still can't believe so many people don't go, there are SO
many people there that you'd think every windsurfer in the country must be
there. Allen Cross really does do a superb job.
Best fun all year for me. 5* for the fun, not the conditions!
