Pwllheli

A long stretch of sand and shingle with stunning views of Abersoch and nearby Cricceith. The water quality has won itself a blue flag award but there are steep shelves in the sea so surfing is not recommened as tides are fairly rough.

A sandy, south facing beach which can have a nasty shorebreak. It can however produce some good bump and jump conditions and all the usual amenities are available nearby as Pwllheli is pretty much the 'capital' of the Lleyn Peninsula. This does however mean that it can get busy, especially in the summer and parking (or even driving through town) can become a problem. When things are quieter, parking is available along the sea front and hotels, clubs, cafes etc are all within easy reach.

The beach curves around from the marina in pwllheli where it faces East to the stretch of beach known as Aberech which faces south. The nearer you are to Pwllheli and the marina entrance the flatter the water is due to the sheltering effect of the marina. Further East along the beach to aberechwaves and chop gets bigger and a punchy shorebreak can develop.

The area around Aberecxh is much quieter and a good kiting venue (less damage to do). On southerly days the shorebreak can get quite evil at high tide but there can be some half decent sized chop or swell.

Kites are not allowed for the 1st 400m or so of the beach at Pwllhelli.

In my opinion though Pwllheli isn't the nicest place on the Lleyn, being neither a thriving seaside town, nor a remote, pretty beach. The views from the beach across the Rhinog mountains are nice enough though.

The sea has steep shelves which go down very deep so the water is not recommended for weak or no swimmers unless they are accompanied by an adult. A warden keeps the beach in good order by cleaning up litter everyday. Dogs are not allowed on the beach during the bathing season between May and September.

I used to live in Pwllheli so know it well. Off the main beach you have good bump and jump conditions in the prevailing SWesterlies. However, don't try launching off the front in a SW Force 6+ with the tide coming in as the shore break is too vicious. If it has been sunny and only blowing a force 2 and you are desparate for a surf, pop along to the sea front at around 4pm as stangely it often picks up to a force 4 for about and hour and a half.

For beginners Abererch is very good and can be accessed via the Marina. This is where the old windusfing school used to launch. Abererch is also very good in a SW gale as being in the lee of the Gimlet Rock and Marina the swell is cleaned up and can be a good 5ft around the old sewage outpost!
