Bornemouth is a long stretch of beach made up of sand. It has a sand bottom and clean ocean water. The beach is backed by a promanade and beach huts. Beyond that are the cliffs which give shelter to the beach. The pier is easily visible from the beach and at the top of the cliff.
Further along the coast is Boscombe Pier. The beach itself has a promanade with beachhuts. There is an arcade arena on the pier with rides during the summer. Other attractions include the stunning park, with colourful night lights (the squirrels are really tame here...so make sure you take peanuts!). The park has its own stationary balloon view of the city. There is the Hard Rock cafe, which is a popular meeting place for watersport lovers. The new Imax Cinema, Seafront Hotels and Bournemouth Aquarium.
The wave in Bournemouth is very similar to the one that works at Boscombe Pier, but with longer rides. The most popular peak is on the East of the Pier. Offshore winds follow through the Bourne Valley for very hollow waves, but this is rare. It is sheltered from gales but can get crowded. As you look out towards the sea the waves usually break on your left of the pier.
For waves to be good the swell direction should be SouthWest or South. The wind direction should be NorthWest, North or NorthEast. During the week it is mostly empty. During the afternoon the crowd may pick up. The weekend will most likely be crowded, especially during the summer. Hazards include locals, although the surfers have got used to tourism, rips and the pier itself. Watch out for waves that either take you towards the pier (which is rare) or waves that break under the pier or currents taking you towards the pier.
Lifeguards patrol the beach in the summer months. Dogs are only permitted on the beach in the winter months. A new artificial reef is being made 200m off the coast. The reef of sandbags, tyres etc. will produce bigger waves from the prevailing winds and swell. The building of the reef is starting in the year 2004. Parking is limited and it is mostly along the roads nearer the beach.
