Wooohooo What a session. The wind filled in from nowhere, there wasn't a
could in the sky and I had a new board to play with.
Well powered with my 5m and my new Naish Hybrid Freewave 86. The board is
lovely, the best way to describe it would be 'playful'. Its short length
means the nose is always hunting around for a piece of chop to play on and
although easy to sail it is also quite a physical board to sail as you have
to constantly be on the ball to keep it tracking nicely.
It feels really fast off the wind, isn't great upwind but is certainly more
than capable, feels nice in the air and just loves to turn.
I made some really noce fully planing duck gybes and plenty of nice carve
gybes too. I didn't have my GPS with me so I don't know how fast it
actually was, but it certainly felt fast which is what really counts.
Derek and Chris then turned up on the beach and as they launched their
kites the wind droped from 25 knots to next to nothing. I sunk and all of a
sudden the board became pretty difficult. It certainly isn't much fun to
sail without any wind as it tends to luff up into wind really quickly and
its short length makes it difficult to keep it going. When powered up it
sailed through the lulls nicely, but when completely underpowered it is
hard work.
All in all though it feels nice and I had an excellent (and unexpected)
couple of hours on the water.
