Surf / Sea State: Flat Air Temperature: Up and down Sea Temperature: dunno Weather: passing cloud/some sun Max Speed: Distance Covered: Well we had quite a bit of wind in the south east on Saturday but in a useless direction. The remains of an old front kept it cloudy and stopped the NW wind turning properly onshore with the hoped-for sea breeze effect. In fact it actually rained at one point – only the second time here in Brighton for a month. I actually started the day with an organised bike ride, leaving early this morning, and came back via Shoreham where the wind was almost dead offshore rather than the cross-off morning winds we'd expected. Back in Brighton however our beach is more open to the west and by mid-morning it was noticeably more cross to cross-offshore here (WNW). Unfortunately, this wind pattern lasted all day until late afternoon. I hung on in the hope that the cloud would clear and the wind would swing properly onshore but it was never quite there. At about 3pm a couple of 'guinea pig' sailors launched off Hove in cross-on WSW streaks of winds (with about 6m sails) and they planed overpowered for a while but then were almost becalmed in the holes. At their best, these gusty winds were created mostly by the passing clouds. It didn't seem worth heading to West Witterings because of the mid- day low tide – and because this would be to drive away from the wind. Friends of mine made the more sensible choice and went to Tidemills/ Seaford, where a NW wind always funnels out of Newhaven harbour. There it was solid 6 or 7m weather apparently from 3pm to 5 or 6pm, though still gusty, and no waves. But we'll know next time! No wind now for a few days. Unless the building temperatures can create a sea breeze, despite the soaring high pressure. So just one star today, as I didn't actually sail. It's been a good week though. |
