15th March 2003 Windsurfing: Ynyslas Estuary Wind Direction: NE Wind Stength: 20 knots Surf / Sea State: Flat Air Temperature: 9C Sea Temperature: 7C Weather: Sunny Max Speed: Distance Covered: Another Brilliant day at the office.... I got to the estuary at around 2.30pm and found chaos at the entrance. Last nights strong winds had blown a mini dune across the road on the entrance to the sands and no one could get onto the beach so the road was jam packed with cars. Ben and his van were already on the beach as was a land-rover, so I pulled in and took a look at the sand. Radical Rob was there too watching people get stuck in the sand and trying to free themselves. Once the road was clear I picked my route, had a run up and went for it. I took the longest route where the sand was deepest (just to add to the excitement!) but also because it was straight allowing me to keep my speed up. I made it through, just, to cheers from the watching crowd. Ben was rigging a 4.5m sail and I decided to wait around for a bit as there wasn't much water and the wind didn't look too good. Ben got planing once, then worked his way acorss to the main channel and across to Aberdovey, where the wind dropped completely. He ended up getting towed back by a jet-skier, came back in and packed up and went home. Radical Rob and I hung around the beach for a bit then Dave and Sarah turned up. After I persuaded them to give it a go across the sand dune, they all got their cars onto the beach. I started rigging a 5.7m sail as I thought the wind would once again fill in as it has done the last few days. Rob rigged a 6.5m as did Dave and Sarah. Chris and Mike also turned up at the beach and started setting up their kites. I got out on the water before the others and had half an hour blasting back and forth just nicely powered up, but slightly underpowered in the occasional lull. Radical Rob joined me after a while but couldn't get going. Dave and Sarah eventually got out on the water, just as the wind started filling in. We then all had a really good session. Sarah was blasting back and forth on her big board, Dave was enjoying himself on his Astro Rock and even Rob started to enjoy himself. The wind continued to pick up and Dave and Sarah soon became overpowered. I worked my way upwind and then sailed across to Aberdovey, getting some nice chop hops off the swell in the channel. When I got the beach on the other side I met Stevebus there and had a little chat before sailing back to Ynyslas. Stevebus followed me acros part of the way. A few runs later I then saw Stevebus floundering out by the point, but left him too it. However, a little while later he was still there so I went over to investigate. He had run aground on the point and once again it had claimed another fin. He couldn't sail back, so I arranged for Rob to drive him to Machynlleth and got Ann to drive from Aberdovey to Mac to meet them there. I phoned Ann just to let her know Stevebus was safe and not lost at sea, but she didn't seem particularly bothered!! I went back out for another few runs and was still well powered up. I could easily have got away with a 4.5m sail and my wave board towards the end, but the sun was setting and I didn't have time to change down. All in all a good day that was enjoyed by everyone. |
