16th July 2016 Windsurfing: Levington Wind Direction: w Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: flat Air Temperature: 25 Sea Temperature: Weather: sunny periods Max Speed: 14.79 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 20 (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Levington to the Orwell Bridge and then to Harwich :) Awake at 7.30 and it looked breezy so checked the laptop, it was gusting 20 mph but from the west, so it was another trip to the River Orwell at Levington. I arrived at the marina at 8 with about an hour to high water but the wind looked fairly light so rigged big and decided to beat up river to the Orwell bridge at Ipswich hoping to see some old boats as it was the big barge race todayand I was not disappointed:) It was a nice beat up river even though the wind was up and down - the windsurfing was secondary to being on the water with loads of old barges readying themselves for the race while others were sailing down from Ipswich. It was crowded with pleasure craft waiting for the start of the race. On reaching the bridge I was backwinded as usaul while passing under and got a welcome cooling drip as it was 25 degrees today. I passed back under the bridge and started the 5 mile run back as the winds went even lighter. I still managed to sail faster than most of the boats getting really close to the barges, a fine sight they are under sail. The start line was just below Pin Mill and it was a bit hectic as the big boats were vying for position, I managed to get back to Levington before the start so I could take some pics as the boats sailed towards Felixstowe docks:) I then decided to follow and sailed to Harwich past many barges and the huge container ships including one called Millau Bridge! The wind was fairly light in the large area of water between Felixstowe and Harwich and I was now against the tide but I got back up river with no problem. I saw Andy Mexome and family out in their rib having fun, then when walking my kit back to the van I was heckled by Mark Swain who had sailed round to the marina and was then heading up to Ipswich to celebrate his birthday with a film and a meal:) You don't have to sail flat out to have a 5 star day it was special being out on the river with so many boats in the sunshine:) Photo Gallery here |
